Engine booster increases acceleration, or how quickly you change speed.
Defense power increases shield and armor repair rates.

In what situations are these actually useful?
When would you want faster acceleration over higher speed or turning?
When would it be better to have defenses recharge faster when they could avoid that percentage of damage altogether?

Higher speed does no good if it takes 60 secs to get there. You use acceleration every time you speed up or slow down. Trying to stay on the rear? Acceleration is where it is at, along with the turn speed. Personally, I like them on my bombers and dessies.

Its a trade-off. I always used def rechargers back in the day on my Luth dreads. Helps to heal a bit faster when cloaked, and allows you to return to fight faster. Used the same when I was ICC for a while. Its a trade-off like anything else. Comes down to personal play styles and preferences.

I'm not so sure about the defense power. On one hand you negate damage entirely, on the other, you take damage as normal, but repair that much faster.

I don't know the calculation right off, but would you recover faster from a fight by recharging faster or avoiding that much damage?

Wouldn't it be better to take half damage, rather than 150% repair rate?

It depends on your playstyle, which is why those options are there.

Defense power is best when attached on human cruisers/destroyer, especially ICC and least useful when attached on Luth. Why? Because shield has the swiftest original self repair rate; and Luth armor has the slowest original self repair rate.

How about UGTO?
Armor HP adds weight to ship's mass, hence slow down your speed acceleration and turning. Clearly, Defense Power is more suitable than Defense Upgrade when speed is more important than total HP of armors. So you should equip defense upgrade on dread/station and defense power on cruiser/destroyer. And, there is no point to have engine booster and defense upgrade on a ship altogether. But color exhaust should be equip on all ships because they save your time drasmatically over days!

Acceleration = Thrust / Mass. Thrust is a steady number because it's controlled by engine. As aformentioned, armor adds weight to ship's mass. Hence you should only equip engine booster on ICC (because they have least armor in game) and avoid equiping it on UGTO (because UGTO armor has highest HP). However this value of all ships (all factions) is under 2 so it's not worth any credit.

How about K'Luth?
Turning depends on mass and acceleration. It's a question whether engine booster increases turning. It depends on the formula though. But as said, there is not a clear point to have both defense upgrade and Engine Booster/Maneuvering Jets on a same ship.
Clearly speed and acceleration is meaningless with station, turning is your only option. Turning is vital especially when you're fighting close, thus equip it on assualt dread. Speed is for the rest.

Summary
  • Defense Power for human cruiser/destroyer.
  • Defense Upgrade for dread/station and Luth.
  • Engine Booster = waste of credit.
  • Engine Tuner for cruisers/destroyers.
  • Maneuvering Jets for ICC dread/station.
