It is nog needed to put engines on the front of the ship. There is a way to put it in de external engines (the ones next to the ship)

Given that you decelerate as quickly as you accelerate I'm guessing that's the case in-universe.

nooooo, u decelerate because your engines pull on the fabric of space while at speed, which makes space pull the ship back, thus slowing it down.
totally no engine exists which is more realistic than above mentioned
