The Beta server has been started again, in preperation for an update for beta that will hopefully be coming in the new few weeks.
As you all know, Faustus has been working away at a new server backend for DarkSpace. What is a backend? It's the system that controls how the server handles pretty much everything.
In an attempt to solve issues that many have had with lag in DarkSpace, we're attempting to move over to a hybrid network system, wherein we use UDP and TCP to send data over the network, instead of just TCP now. This will lower CPU usage, and increase the speed of which data gets passed between the server and client.
Currently, beta is only running an old version of the network that Faustus was testing. We hope to have an updated version of beta running by the 16th of this month.
If you want to give it a whirl and see some of the changes that we're trying, head over to the DarkSpace Beta website (click DarkSpace Developer in my signature), and download the beta GCQL. It won't install over the current DarkSpace install you have, so don't worry.
Please bare in mind that this is not a representation of the final system, and there will be many errors. We are aware of the glaring errors that the current system has, and many have been addressed in the update that will hopefully be coming shortly.
On the content side of things, me and Drafell have started tweaking weapon values in an attempt to balance out many of the glaring issues we have in the current version. Some of, but not all of the changes, include:
- Significant changes to all core weapons.
- Gauss cannon changes
- Levels are now locked to ship hull type, so no more tedious upgrading
- Max ranges have been signifcantly reduced on most cannons
- Bomb damage greatly reduced to make bombing harder (as well as other misc changes to bombing in general)
- Wormhole Devices range reduced to 1/10th current range
We'll be working hard over the next few weeks reviewing every weapon and changing values if needed. Most of the changes will not make it into beta until the update.
I have also been making head way in my understanding of DarkSpace in code. I have been making a few changes to GCQL 2.0, such as lines of text that report "Error: Line too long...", now get sent to chat history so you can make them shorter. I will continue to update this, and anyone who wants to see these changes can feel free to contact me for the files.
As always you can check the development log for updates. I personally enter most of the public changes I make to there.
I will update this thread when beta has been updated, until then, have fun.
p.s. We are aware of the errors and bugs that are currently in beta. Please don't use this post to inform us of bugs and issues. A thread for that will be made when we start Phase 1 testing.

YAY beta again, just wondering where weill we need to go to download the new updated verson of beta, cause i havent been really up to date on beta lately.
