As you may or may not be aware, Faustus has been working tirelessly for the past few weeks porting the server backend over to Linux. This was spured on by a chance find of a very nice startup hosting company, that offered cheap and powerful servers for about a third of what we pay now to host DarkSpace. Faster server, more bandwidth, faster connection - win win. That is, if you take out the monumental task of having to switch the entireity of the DarkSpace code-base to a new project version, and then having to port the server over to Linux...

Anyway, where here! It's been done! And all is good!

Well... Not quite.

There are a few issues that I will note here that may affect some or all players until we get the bugs sorted out.

1) The mirror server on the server is not functioning properly. The reason the map data on the server is out-of-date is due to the fact that the data-set on the server is not up-to-date. This is bad. For sync issues, crash reasons, and, well, its just bad. Currently, the client has a more up-to-date data-set than the server, and whilst there are no glaring data changes overall (thank god!), there may well be some sync issues, as we have no idea what is updated, and what is not.

Once this is rectified, the map will revert to its previous incarnation, or, future carnation - whichever way you want to look at it (we know some of you want this current map, but there are fundamental flaws in its layout, and there are performance concerns with it - this is not debatable, but we can always try improving the intended map).

The constant disconnects are most likely caused by this, and will hopefully be rectified shortly.

2) We moved DarkSpace over to VS 2005. This means that all of you need the 2005 redistribution installed on your machines (its a light 14mb~). This is required for DarkSpace to work, and a quick google or search on microsoft.com for "2005 redist" will sort you out in quick stead. Failing that, updating GameCQ, and restarting your system should also solve the problem (there is a vs2005_(x86).exe in your GameCQ directory should you wish to use it).

3) The web server is now running on the latest version of PHP. We used a dated one to do all our web-bidding, and moving over to PHP 5 means there may well be some issues with the website functionality-wise. Please report these as soon as so we can fix them.

So more powerful server, broader bandwidth and faster connection at 1/3 price compared to the last one...

You can start a simple survey on surveymonkey with questions like
  1. Do you like the current map? (y-n).
  2. Why?
  3. Any idea to improve it?
  4. Do you want the old map where Kaus is in the center?

How about Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)?
I guess who doesn't have problem with running DS doesn't need to do anything.

Why? Those were answered months ago already

Planetary shields are limited to 1 per planet, I saw no mention of this as an intended change in the devlog or anywhere else so it looks like a fun bug that's popped up.

It keeps reverting to Unicode everytime I switch webpages.

Most, if not all, of these issues should be fixed with last nights update.
