Why not make them able to be point defence?
Why not? that would maybe make them usefull for once.

well obviously there would be restriction and member guys, im thinking 1482 where there are no "slots".
im not exactly sure how the modding will work, but i think there could be a way for people to choose between Pulsebeams/sabots(psi cannons) and gaussguns/cl550
frankly, id rather have gauss for shooting missles n fighters, and lazers for attacking NME ships.

As far as i remember from talking to Gideon the Gauss gun or any other guns/cannon cannot be used for Point Defense simply because the system cannot register the impact to figters from these devices.
Lasers however seem to work totally different and thus can be used.
also last time i chat whit him about gauss i heard that they will be adapted for better use, but i could be wrong has been a while

Actually, that's a pretty good comparison according to my latest info... Heavy railguns will have several thousand gu's range, and lots of damage... drawback being it doesnt track... so, yeah, sniper cannon

*insert Sean Connery acent*You wanna get the K'luth? I'll tell you how to get the K'luth. One of their men pulls a ECM fort, your man pulls a gauss gun. They send your man to the hospital, you send their man to the morgue. That's how you get the K'luth.*/accent*
Sorry... I couldn't resist.
---EDIT: Just a thing or two... spaced way too many times.

Gauss Guns...
They should make them fast longrange and hight damage BUT extremely slow to fire

No they should do the damage control of gauss like Lasers only in reverse.
meaning that the max damage is applied when you fire it at MAX range and the closer the enemy they lower the damage.

gauss guns are quite funny
have you ever built a long range ship without missiles?
