Hrmm I'm on a starwars kick so don't rape me too hard on the flames.
In the SW universe (the first time i've heard of an interdictor) the ship is massive, almost star destroyer size. The description says that massive amounts of energy are needed to keep the gravity field operating, note it barely moves while using the field. So why not try it.
Give the interdictor its own class of ship altogether. Bigger than a cruiser, smaller than a Dread. With maybe 6 fighter bays and a few CL's/ruptors for defense (you could even make the K'luth version really weird?)
Also to think about, the interdictor device should really screw up things around it, it shouldn't work while jumping and should leave a nice little wake behind it so your fleet should have to wait a few minutes to follow you.
As far as planetary interdictors.... I think they are STUPID, a giant gravity field eminating from a planet? don't you think that would mess things up a bit? Call me crazy...but maybe thats something that we could need platforms for, to have dictors around planets, that way an attack force could destroy or capture the platform to take the interdictor field down.

maybe there should be a Change to Dictors.
I agree it is stupid that another Gravity well has to be generated from the planet. maybe Bodies such as planets and other such objects should Have a Natural interdictor field that corresponds to the bodies mass. IE: gas Giants big field.. tiny Rock lil bitty one.

I do too...Planets should have a field that stops ships a ways out depending on the size of the rock....smallest say 500gu. Biggest, 1500??

Awesome for pointing that out, that is a great idea.

I would have thought that it depends on whether DS interdictors are based on gravitational or quantumn waves effects. If it's quantum wave then gravity has no impact on the field.

pffftt..
Of course you could always argument, then, that the quantum effects involved with creating the hyperspeed tunnel would cause if generated to close to a large mass..

And if planetary interdictors work on gravity, wouldn't they just be constantly pulling asteroids into the planet and killing everyone on it?

Sweet.
This should be implemented, immediately.

i don't like your idea of a new ship but a natrul dictor sounds pretty good

I thought the interdictors flooded the area with a tachylon field that is supposed to stop *some* jumpdrives.

Hmm, maybe some anomalies that throw out tachyon fields could be intoduced. another version of a nebula maybe. wouldbe pretty cool having one around a cluster that effects all factions. Then you could also introduce the anti-dictor. Or it would give another use for the wormhole drive.

Either way lets do something different any comments on the dictor wake idea?
Also I really think a dictor should stop friendly ships as well. We use the same engines what makes it stop one and not the other?

Knowledge of the tachyon field properties would enable your faction to overcome these difficulties. Maybe modifying your ships tach drive so that it creates a localised effect around your ship that nullfies the tach field.

one would think so.
Does it say anywhere what the Interdictor uses? is it a Gravity well?
