We don't need more ranks.
We need more difficult promotions. This includes badge-requisites for promotion (as I suggested a few weeks ago), and higher pres totals. I think Fleet Admiral should be closer to 80k prestige.
I also think that prestige gain needs to be balanced. Building gives you very little prestige, as does planet capturing, and supplying gives you WAY too much, as does combat.
That's a better solution than more ranks.

Another note:
Promotion prestige levels need to be more spread out, instead of exponential like they are now. I am using my coupon on a trial account and I played around for a bit. I got my Ensign AND 1st Lieutenant promotions in one game.
That's insane, no matter how small those promotions may be.
Oh yea, and coupled with this, the ships still need to be rebalanced so that Frigates actually mean something.

Frigates are just fine. Most people just fly them wrong.

Fly them against K'luth or UGTO, they don't last long.
they're fun though... anyone remember that ICC Frigate Fleet that was put together some months back?

Actually, we only have 146 Fleet Admirals, We probably have a similar number of Admirals.

The reason why Combat/Supply presteige is so easy to gain is because of the hull beefup issue...

The problem lies back when hull values were increased.
They were increased while the ships damaged prest remained the same.
So in effect ALL ships became worth more prest when you destroyed them and same with repairing.
Months and months and months ago I mentioned this and we need to fix it.

Also, K'luth Destroyers and UGTO Assault Destroyers, and to a lesser extent ICC Assault Cruisers, all gain prestige far out of proportion to what is risked by losing one.

I know im going a bit off topic with this reply, and i apologise Juxt
I, personally, think that the current promotion level is ALMOST fine for ranks of captian and below, though i agree that you should need the badges to be promoted for example all the bronze badges for 2nd Lt.
Past captain however i think things go a bit wrong. Would you seriously premote someone to a 2nd Rear Admiral simply because they had re-supplied a few hundred ships as a Captain...no? didn't think so.
What DS needs is a way to rate peoples leadership abilities, rather then their spacebar mashing abilities, and to then promote them past Captain based on this. This score should be highly dynamic, raising and falling based on how well people under their command fair on the MV.
How this is to be done is a topic for its own thread, but i believe it would require a compleate over-haul of the way player assigned missions and groups work. As this is on the to do list i plan to sit back and wait, while continiuing to abuse my spacebar on FA (weapon groups, wtf are they? )
Back on topic
As for ranks above Fleet Admiral, i would have to say i agree with this, though not in the way Juxt has theorised.
I believe that there should be 2 or 3 dynamic positions above Fleet Admiral. By dynamic i mean that rather then having to reach a certain score to achive them their should be a limited number of these positions available on each faction on the MV, and the most competent Fleet Admirals would be assigned to them. If someone else should become more competent (ie better score) then they will replace one of the existing post-Fleet admiral people.
Of course these ranks would mean nothing untill the mission system was overhauled (must...resist urge...to go...off topic)

Well i think most of us agree on 1 thing... there is little to aim for after FA.
I would like to see those dynamic ranks too maybe it can be based on actions in the MV. Like 100 planets capped for your faction you get super-fa for 1 week ... 100 enemies shot.. sniper-fa for 1 week... 100 planets defended.. planethugger-fa for 1 week .. etc..
Anyways i dont really care which idea gets implemented as long as it gives something to aim for besides sd-ing your station over and over to get nr 1 in kamikaze ofcourse
