Ok got 1 basic question/suggestion.
WHY do missiles when tracking a ship go straight into a planet if the target hides behind it.
i mean missiles were supposed to be "smart" right?
i suggest you let em act like the fighters do now... let em fly around or over the planet instead of just going kamikaze into one.
dont let em dodge friendly ships.... it has still got to take some skill when you use em
but surely they have to be able to see the diffence between a cruiser and a PLANET.
thank you for listening.

yeah they are called smart cuz they follow the target. but this doesnt mean they can move around planets. thats the differenz between kamikaze fighter and missiles isnt it??
and you say let em hit ships but not planets... isnt it easyer to avoid a ship than a planet??? i think those size alone cant even be compared...

Ummm... the CPU costs for running 30-100 missiles that smart might get out of hand... but then again, perhaps not...

those missiles are dumb, they dont hit, they dont auto detonate once they are close enough to a (especially) small target

it would def be cool if they where a lil smarter but going around planets i understand that is to much but other then that i think they should be smarter

Missiles shot by planets should not be able to travel trough planets

Perhaps a modified version of the fighter routine, except that when it reaches it's target, it hits the target and explodes, and when it's target is lost (range, cloak, etc.) it flys straight until it uses up it's projectile life, then explodes.
Just my completely random guess as to how this could be done...
As a side note:
Doing this would further imbalance the strength of clustered planets vs non-clustered planets. Since our most valuable planets (terran) are typically not clustered and our least vaulable planets (barren) tend to be clustered, this might take DS further in an inbalance direction we don't want to go.

perhaps but do remember that if you do it correctly the defending side has the pint defense of the planet to shoot the missiles down.
it gives you more reason to cap that planet fast * or raze it down *
heck its doing that already.
i think this would prevent ships from hiding behind a planet which is i think a big point of iritation.....
you just need to get enough ITs to get past the planets PD
You can still use the planets as a shield but smart weapons need to be SMART imo.

i think the only missle that woudl have the smarts to go around things, would be t eh PCM, i mainly base that idea off of current crusier missles that can navagite terran
and also about posably modifying the fighter code, that just means you can make one more fighter class
Kamikaze fighters, they shoot till they get to there target and then run themselves into it

PCMs already will turn away from a planet if their arming cycle has not been completed (100 gu), they are some kind of clever, btw could fighters please fly around planets the way ships do, currently sending fighters above gas giants makes it impossible for PD ships to intercept those

The definition of "Smart" weapons is generally a small seeker head to compute the direction of the target and fins on the rear to steer. That's it. They're just called smart weapons compared to "Dumb" weapons like the age old dumbfire missiles and bombs.
