I had a thought on the lag...
Could this be a symptom of packet coalescing? I have seen DB's take some pretty major hits becuase of that flag. Some Unix systems control it via either the Kernel or the network proto file, but I am not sure how winders handles it. I have also seen some OS's /compilers where you could set it as a compiler directive.... Might be worth looking into... (?)
