Ok, well lets start by saying that the game includes the following resources:
Credits
Food
Oxygen
Hydrogen
(oxygen and hydrogen = water for those of you who dont know.)
These are the essentials of sustaining life. SO, with that being said every ship has a crew. Crews are people too that require the essentials that keep us alive.
Heres my point, keep your crew alive or they die and you wait for another player to rescue your ship or an enemy captures it. The bigger the ship, the more resources it takes which requires more credits.
