Hi dear Faustus, dear Dev Team..

Please dont take this wrong, you know im standing all behind you and that.
This, tho, is supposed to be the thread for everyone who is getting the FPS drop from Hell syndrome..

All input and discussion of any kind is appreciated, with 2 exceptions
- Random nonsense
- Whining

I request all replies that fall under those categories be removed by Mod powers immediately, thank you!

First of all, i'd like to ask for everyone who is gettign the syndrome, and i know its more than just a handful of people, to post their system specs as per this example:

- 800 Mhz dual P3
- 512 MB RAM
- Geforce 2 MX
- DirectX 9.0a
- Windows 2000
- NVIDIA reference drivers (detonator) 4.5.2.3

Now, since a picutre says more than a thousand words, i've compiled a few screenshots to illustrate the point:

please note that the FPS in the tactical example is above average.
http://hydra.is-a-geek.net/ds/fpsrant/

I'd really like to know if there is any way i could tune my system, if the performance problems i am experiencing are "normal" and i should upgrade, or if this is a known issue scheduled for later improval and - most important - i'd like a statement from F himself possible what the minmum system requirements are he is aiming for, if you thougth about that please

I'd also like to make this a strong petition for removing all ship and smart projectile rendering from the navigation screen ASAP, since the navigation screen is, due to the Nav-Map-Zoom-is-on-Crack-at-low-FPS Bug that i will explain if its not clear what im referring to, unsuable which means certain death in a station if attacked by a huge force since you cant even set a WH target!

This has another reason too; its easy to see enemy ships visually on Navigation if you zoom in, even if you have no contact with them!

dont think i suffer from this quite as much as sono, but it is kinda hard to read the fps with the way alt+p is these day, and if theres enough stuff going on to give me >5 fps, chances are im too busy to study my framerate

- 1.2ghz Athlon
- 512 MB RAM
- TNT2
- DirectX 9.0b
- Windows ME
- NVIDIA reference drivers (detonator) 4.1.0.3

maybe insead of taking all ship, fighter and missile contacts off the nav, maybe just fighters and missile, or at least turn off the names. get a pitched battle going and there'll be so many "B-27 Fighter" and "IT Missile"s on the board its hard to read anything else

Ive just flown a scout to Mycopia.

FPS on arrival ~22
FPS under massive planetary fire ~13, which is still quite playable
FPS when Sky opened 6 disruptors on me: ~3!

Got some:

2.4GHz
256MB DDR-RAM
nVidia GeForce 440MMX(I know it's a good videocard, but I sill dont have
money:))
DSL-128Mbaults/S(I know slow, but Still dont have money to afford more )
Sound Max Internal Audio, with Boston stereo with Sound wuffer(SP?)
Well As im running DS, I also run NAT, NIS, Beind a router(lan speed 54MB/s), Winamp(for background Music), Some other process:))

Well I do lag, but presently the normal FPS range(without mass lag) is 50 to 120(in the 1.480b version with a DSL-1.5MByte/s, I had a FPS of 250 to 300)

well I hope the lag will be resolved:) but F take your time, and dont listen to those whiners, I (like most people that are in the DS comunity since Beta phase 4, well I hope) know that you are the only programmer of DS. So good luck tracking all those MemLeak:)

I can't read my fps. The numbers change too fast, but I guess it's okay.

under windows drop the quality settings to performance / high performance..and set the amount of ram that windows uses for DX on the card a little higher ( say 60 - 70 ish if it already isnt ( default is 60 i think) usualy 20 - 30 above what it usualy is is good )

also update your drivers ...

http://www.nvidia.com latest i think is 5.3.0.3

also see if AA is on, AA uses a lot of GFX resources, so turn it down or off ( if it isnt already )

also set anastropic to off or x2 aswell this is not as resource hungry as AA but iv had a 20 - 30 fps raise from having it off...

try fideling with these settings, they will by no means damage your card like overclocking does....

hope this helps

Ok.. i have set absolutely every graphics option to absolutely nothing, and there was no improvement whatsoever..

this is definitely CPU related.. The graphics card has nothing to do with it.

guess i wont be playing until i upgrade my windows box majorly

2 more screenshots, with Graphics back on full as it doesnt make any difference anyhow:

My system specs:

P4-M 2.2Ghz
512MB PC2100
Geforce 4 440go (equivalent GF4 440mx)
1600x1200 resolution.

The only time i really lag is when something big blows up on my screen (cruiser size and up)

the resulting huge fireball just grinds my computer to a halt, perhaps a lower resolution fireball is needed?

i believe my detail settings are on medium, otherwise the game plays fine until there are 50+ fighters/missiles flying around, then i tend to see it game pause every few seconds, not FPS lag, but literally, the game pauses. so possibly cpu crunching.

anyhow, methinks its an issue with the number of objects being tracked/rendered, but then again, i haven't seen any of the code, so i have no clue, i'll just leave my feedback and hopefully it'll get worked out. thxthx! ^^

I've been getting this my whole DS career, my sysspecs are posted in a number of topics... I've tried just about every trick in the book told to me, and no change, so I think its more of a software conflict... It's good to know I'm not suffering alone anymore .
