Just wanted to drop you all a line, and let you know what is planned for v1.482. This is not very specific, but should give you an idea of what's coming shortly. It should give you an idea of the broad goals of this next patch, and some idea of what we are thinking along the lines of.

Planned weapon arcs:

Full
Forward
Port
Starboard
Aft
Forward/Port
Forward/Starboard
Aft/Port
Aft/Starboard
Forward/Port/Starboard
Aft/Port/Starboard
Fixed Forward

Thematic design of ships:

There are some general themes to ships:

Support Category -

Engineer - Specialized in bulding up planetary infrastructure.

Minelayer - Primarily a mine laying ship. Poor in direct ship-to-ship combat. Also doubles as a mine sweeper.

Screening ship - Primary tactical systems are beams, with all beams and weapons being of the smallest size and largest number possible. Generally used for escort.

Scout - Specialized in sensor/anti-sensor work.

Station - Fills the role of a front line base. Very high defensive power, relativly low offensive power. Posses capacity to both repair ships and build planets. Not intended for direct combat.

Supply - Specialized in supply and repair of ships in the field.

Transport - Specialized in transport of troops and military material.

Combat Category -

Assault - Mostly forward mounted weapons, defenses concentrated forward. Low-Ave weapons in port/star, low-ave defenses in port/star. Poor weapons and defenses in aft. Primary tactical systems consist of beams of appropriate sizes.

Attack - Similar to assualt, but primary tactical systems consist of weapons of appropriate sizes.

Bomber - Primarily a planetary bombardment ship. Poor vs other ships.

Carrier - Primarily delivers fighters to the battlefield. Poor in direct ship vs ship combat, but very versitile and powerful from long range.

General Warship - Tactical systems are distributed as evenly as possible between forward, port, and starboard arcs. Slightly greater firepower in forward arc. Rear arc is the best armed of any combat ship, but still the weakest arc.

Hybrid - A multi-role warship, capable of combat, bomber, and carrier duties. However, not as strong in any of these roles as a specialized ship of the same class.

Line Ship - Tactical systems and defenses are concentrated in the port and starboard arcs. Weaker forward and aft arcs.

Each faction is a bit thematic, too:

ICC tends to favor line ships, UGTO tends to favor general warships, K'Luth tend to favor assault/attack ships. Also, K'Luth tend to rely a bit more on beams, while humans tend to rely a bit more on weapons.

Finally, the hulls themselves are planned to have different statistics. The base ICC hull is different than the base UGTO or K'Luth hull.

ICC tend to be tougher, through the use of older and more proven technologies and increased redundant systems. However, thier engine systems arn't very advanced, and their power systems are not very efficient.

UGTO ships tend to have more power, through advanced power storage and distribution systems. However, they don't have as much redundancy as ICC ships and use more cutting edge (so less proven) technologies. This results in less hull strength than the ICC ships. Also, UGTO ships tend to have more advanced engines than the ICC, and so better top speeds. However, while the UGTO base ships are more maneuverable than the ICC, the ICC's use of shields allows for less mass on their ships, and so the ICC have more actual maneuverability in combat than the UGTO.

K'Luth ships tend to have more speed and maneuverability than the other factions. This is due to both lighter construction, and lighter bio-mechanical materials. However, this results in them having less hull strength than either human faction. Also, their ships have the lowest power output. K'Luth weaponry, however, draws some of it's power supply from crew psionics. Because of this, their weapon components have lower power requirements, which helps mitigate their ship's lack of power systems.

EDIT: Forgot full in the weapon arc lists.

This is interesting.

Is it safe to assume there will be Ships of each almost combat Category in the Hull classes Frigate, Destroyer, Cruiser, and Dreadnought, assuming the Dreadnought is not replaced by Line Ships?

We shall see how it all works out, theres not much else to take from that i think..

Sounds good!

Will give extra options and real variety between the factions hopefully!

Maybe we can see a re-distribution of ships between ranks and re-evaluation of ship requirements. Would be nice to see 1 or 2 slight varients on stations and a few more types of dreadnaughts in the mix as well!

Us GA's, we dont want some super ship, but we do want something exclusive to for our rank you know....

Maybe make the standard FA Station have the WH Device Mrk I and the GA station have a WH Device Mrk II.

Bares some thought. Anyway, good luck to Faustus and the Dev Team with 1.482, it finally looks like 1.481 has bedded down nicely now!

Oooooooooo battleships built around outdated fighting techniques. Those better have some serious side weapons. And other than that little misgiving it all looks great.

Same here

Is it correct to assume that there will be weapons/armor multipliers in 1.842? i.e. the railgun of a dread is x times more powerful then a scout's railgun?

ok let me get this correct, Icc are going to have shields that use energy but no power... Ugto are going to have power lots of power but

the only way i see this is going to happen is, with ICC useing cannons, rather than torps, and Ugto useing torps rather than cannons...

All i gotta say is, i hope cannons get a HUGE power boost... as it is, they are a huge joke...
