I just thought of something, how about something like emergancy stop, which causes a rapid deceleration. Rapid as in, from full speed in a dread to full stop in 3 seconds or so. The offset of course, is possibly some sort of damage to the engines, large energy drain, etc.

I don't think its a bad idea, but maybe not having e-stop is a good way to teach n00bs how to fly...

Actually now that I think about it, didn't the old eJump kick you from full speed to stop? So get the tach drive involved as part of the penalty, seems only logical.

I'd like it if it was only for certain ships.. like scouts maybe.

Well id like it for when you have a dread and your in Nav, not knowing your about to crash you hear the :

"Collision Alert! Collision Alert! Collision Alert! Collision Alert!"

And you just hit the button and you dont hit. Weeee.

Im all for this.

Guess what guys? We already have that. When all your engines are destroyed your ship stops dead right then and there. The only thing is the engines never get destroyed any more because of our wonderful system damage bug.

Have any of you ever tried removing your IE drives while moving?

Works wonders.

But if you can remove all your drives, then you aren't carrying enough infantry Unless you're a station or transport of course.

That wouldn't exactly be an emergency stop then would it - it would be a planned quick-stop

That seriously shouldn't be necessary IMO... any ship that can withstand constant barrages of energy and missile weapons, as well as hyperjump should have the hull integrity to withstand a sudden velocity change (that is what hyperjump is isn't it?).

But, have to consider this - how often should emergency stop be used, and what should it be a function of? Should it be something that a ships engines can do (reverse thrust burst or something - which would open the door to reverse drive... maybe not a bad idea, new dimension to fighting "ALL BACK FULL!!") or should it be a seperate ship system, like a one or two time use retro rocket?

Thoughts?
