i think it would be cool to hava a weapon like the mine rocket or something
if would have a ammo quan. of 5 and take 1 min to reload
200 gu range velocity 20 gu it would make a mine field 75 gu's in diamiter in a circle only the minelayer destroyer would have it and it would fit in a special mine slot that only the mielayer destroyer would have.
plz respond to this

Having enough mines to cover 75gus and stuffing it into a rocket scares me.... Shoot the rocket at the enemy and watch it go BOOM!
Wouldn't mind having some sort of large area mine dispenser however (it'll probably make minelaying too easy though).

nono good idea...... and to counter the "boom" affect. the mines only arm once the missle drops them. they arnt always armed.
this is good idea for me but personally...... id rather have this.
u ctrl-click location then press (a button) and the minelayer dessey flys at like... 5 Gu, or so...... and "drones" drop the mines in a pattern. (say 75 gu in diamiter)
this way the mines dont change. only the "mine drone" slot is added to dessey.

Awesome Idea I say...
Right now mines are bloody useless... because it seems that no matter what you do they always get PD'd... I say we make em the way they used to be... visible only to scanners and the naked eye.
Besides why would any military buy some crappy mine that everyone could see?

For example, maybe a special fighter/bomber that carries a cluster mine. The fighter/bomber pulls a hard turn after release and heads back, while the cluster mine travels to its target. Once it reaches, it takes about 1.5 seconds to detonate, so it isnt 100% accurate. It then throws out a dozen to about two dozen random amount of mines in a small or wide variable circular field.
I got this idea from C&C Generals, the Chinese Cluster Bomb super weapon

Even if the mines were armed after the mines were dropped, it would still be too powerful. Only an extremely fast ship like a scout could escape the spread area of the mine rocket. Unless there was a several (probably 10) second arming time, I say no. This weapon would simply be turned into an offensive weapon when mines should be defensive.
Imagine firing one at the enemy (or maybe one being fired at you!), the rocket disperses the mines. If you weren't moving fast enough, the mines would envelop you rendering it impossible to escape without damage.

Refering to my post, it should be roughly the speed of a MiRV / slightly slower SABOT.
Also, since these are smaller to be able to fit on the cluster weapon. They would not be as powerful as your regular ICC/UGTO/K'luth mines. They should do a random fraction of the regular mines damage.
These aren't the EMP style, and do small concentrated damage do where it strikes on your ship. Like current day anti-armour mines.
*Edit* Too much to say,
They are designed to disable and incapacitate, not all out destruction
Remember, this is like the 22nd / 23rd century, these are smart and intelligent weapons, so they could possibly tell the signature etc. difference between ship hull types

well it really depends on how many mines are in the rocket... could be a mere 5 mines, which is quite survivable...
No whining... I used to get nuked by more mines than that on a regular basis in 1480 [Thank you PB ]

*Sigh* It'd be nice if people read all the previous posts and made sure what they said makes sense or keeps up with the topic.. or the reply is made from some amount of logic..

I like the ideal of the cluster mine laying fighter but that COULD be used in an attack of other ships. unless it is designed to have a limited range [ the fighter] and then mines are small low damge. That will help it to not be used ofencively and used defencoly. Like for example the Station is being used for ALL offnce attacks when it is MADE TO BE A DEFNCE PLATFORM.

How would you use a station as a defnse platform?
Tahts a complete waste of fire power in my opinion.
