It would be nice if we had an emergency stop or "all stop" command to stop a ship's forward momentum in case of emergency. Even if it is an added component to the ship maybe in place of a forward shield where the Emergency Stop model can be Light or Heavy armored. This would help in the cases where LAG has locked us into a collision course with a planet, or for use as a combat option. Give the unit a long charge time where it can still be used even if it is not fully charged but with diminished efficiency, maybe a total limit of uses (4), or a random chance of internal ship damage due to the strain on the systems from such a stop.

First of all, there would be NO chance of internal dmg or strain to the ship. All you need is forward pointing thrusters, then equalise the force in the back and the front. But no, I don't like this idea.

heh.. been a while since i posted anything in these forums.. but Ive thought it would be a very useful idea for some time now. Imagine the tactical applications in combat.. and those collisions that could be avoided... Dont make it instantly stop your ship though, it could spell OUCH for your crew.. instead a gradual and quickened halt. much like that of the current sub and naval ships make faster stops reversing the prop.

just a note...

when you lag..

your ship does not respond..or its componens...correct??

so when you lag and you hit that shortcut button to emergency stop...

what makes you think its going to respond by the time your inside the planet??? mhh?

There already is an emergency stop. Just go top speed at a planet about..eh 50 gus away, and in a few seconds youll stop moving.

BackSlash, it would be more for those times when you just regain control, only to find yourself 100gu from a planet going 25gu/sec.

I think it is a good idea. If you can stop going FTL instantly how come you can't stop doing it at a sub-light speed? It would really help me out because I lag a lot.

this idea reminds me of the movie top gun, when mavrick does that brake in the air and gets the lock on his target...great movie by the way
