Targeting overlay... |

A useful add-on to DS would be a targeting overlay that displays a different shape for each ship class.
A little triangle / for scouts, and upside-down triangle / for transports/extractors. A square for support class ships (ie engy/supply), a pentagon for destroyers, a hexagon for cruisers, and octagon for dreadnaughts, a (o) shaped symbol for stations and maybe a [-] symbol for platforms.
This overlay could be toggled on and off as an extension of the existing 'alt+c' command which switches the screen diamonds on and off.
A targeted object would get the usual targeting diamond showing instead of its overlay shape.

How about an o shaped symbol for scouts, a triangle for frigates, a sleeker triangle for destroyers, a Hexagon for cruisers, 3 of ^ going vertically, for dreadnaughts, and a square for stations?

It won't make a difference at all.

it would be easier in a battle with kluth to see what ship types are moving around without having to click on them...it also helps in nav screen as the Dread and Transport icons are VERY similar.

i agree totally, even with BS ideas on this one. when a fleet approach, to save time so you can take out the bombers or trannys whilst combat whizz about sounds a great idea

The list in the top right hand side of the nav screen (a list that counts supply ships, transports, scouts, frigates, destroyers, cruisers, dreadnaughts, and stations), is tactitally useless. If I am controlling a battle, I look at the least and find I have 3 dreadnaughts---but what kind? Bombers? Assault ships? Useless cannon fodde---, er combat dreads?
I propose that the list be changed to something a bit more specific, based on the ship's purpose, e.g. assault, bomber, assault, supply, cannon fodder, etc. That way, a commander will know which assets he has in theater and what he needs to marshal to win a battle quickly and efficiently.

IMHO a significant update to the Tactical Display is long overdue.
This suggestions sure is one of the best along those lines, far preferrable to a miniradar.
Can you tell i am bored at work?

Well, this only makes the game easier for people.
Afterall, sometimes it can be kind of tough to weed out the "important" targets from a jumbled fleet of ships.
I personally think that this is putting a toe into the "too easy" zone, but that's just my opinion.

I wouldn't mind having a mini radar, but that IS in the too easy zone
At the very least, we need different icons for the gutter of the screen for when you have fighters/missiles incoming...

fighter = ^
Scout= /
Frigate = <>
Destroyer = /__/
Cruiser = >_>
Dreadnought = [__]
Station = (_)
Engineer = /
_________-/
Supply = (x)
Tansport = /
