I don't like using 'noob' (at least often) - new player seems more respectful.
But, generally, you can discover 'noobs' with a single question.
When you get onto the game, do you know what to do or do you need somebody to tell you what needs to be done?
To clarify, this doesn't include asking "what ship is needed" - it means once you get that ship, you just seem to be exactly where everyone needs you to be.
