Nope, case law states once you take responability for the child, whether its yours or not, you are liable to support that child until its 18 unless the parent with custody writes the court and releases you.
I know two guys that were trying to do "the right thing" by women they dated with kids from other dead beat dads. Couple of years later they split, but the child only knew them as the dad and each time they suddenly got slapped with child support. One guy even had his income tax return siezed.
There is stuff about this all the time on t.v., its a long drawn out fight to get out of it, but you cannot recoup the monies payed out afterwards.
Whats even more screwy is that the way the system works, if you are a deadbeat parent and are not paying your payments, the other person has to go to the court to get you to start paying. The court will then start garnishing your wages or bank accounts directly, keeping an admin fee and then paying your child support payment.
If you later decide to try and renegotiate the payment or try to pay the person directly, no joy. They will still garnish you until the person receiving the checks goes down and fills out a bunch of paper work.
Whats even more messed up is say you are behind 9 months in child support. So your former partner who has the kid has to go to the courts to get you to pay. They wont pay her until you start paying them or they get money from you. And they get their money, trust me. But the screwed up part is. She gets the money from that point forward, but none of the back due child support. But guess what, they still take that money from you too and keep it.
