another thing that might help is to get an air compressor or a can of compressed gas and blow the internals of your computer off as dust can build over time and lead to heat problems... this might help you a little too.

I think it's probably heat related also. The pentium's have a wonderful throttle-down capability built into them - that pretty much guarantees they won't melt down...they may drop to barely useable, but at least you don't have a funny looking paper weight.

I'd tell you to pop the case and simply look to see what's running.
Whirring noises tend to be fans. One thing I noticed on an old P3 I had is...the fan kept making noises...one day it stopped. I looked - it'd stopped completely. Pretty much explained the problems the wife was having with that PC.

I fixed this problem 4 months ago. It was my modem, it was a software, and very very pissy. Bought an external modem and solved the problem.

I know this may be an old thread and you have fixed your problem but to let people know if you have a heat sink (the thing with all the fins on it) between your fan and cpu you can hear it (the cpu fan) off and on to expell radiated heat away from the cpu. It works on the process simular to your home cooling system when it turns off and on to cool your home. Most if not al modern computers have a heat sensing element (Both my HP and my Dell have this function) which clicks on the fan when the cpu heats up... the heavier the cpu usage (Program related... heavy games as mentioned make more cpu udage) the hotter the cpu gets and the heat sinks can only bleed off (radiate) X amount of heat per minute. Once you exceed the heat sinks cooling threshold by a set amount... (X amount of Degrees F) it clicks on and cools the cpu/heat sink to a set temp then clicks off.

Your modem, because it was wonky, was over tasking the CPU therefore causing the fan to run more under heavy load.... That is how I interpret the problem. This post is for those who might also have a problem in the future.

Yeah software modems are like that.
For anyone else that experiences a simlar problem:-

Visit the modem chipset manufacturures website and download the LATEST drivers. It fixes nearly all issues associated with software modems cutting out during use.

If it shows up in Devicer Manager as a Lucent or LT Winmodem then you need to visit the Agere site (Lucent changed name to Agere a few years back)
