I'm trying but its kind of difficult to make photo realistic worlds from scratch...

I'm willing to give it a shot... just let me know how to do it... i mean, make a night and a day texture or what... and dimensions/dpi would be nice too.

Actually, I just went into beta and noticed how very pixelated Earth is.
Is it just my computer or what?

Whats your settings at, its not that pixulated on mine
I have it rendered at 2048x1024... If I go any higher it will start chewing up serious resources. Still better than the original map.

Actually some of the worlds largest cities are noticeable from space because of the amount of light that is usually given off.
Therefore, at a future point in time, going by the idea that cities would expand in size, they would become even more visible from space.

As stated before, since these are real satelite images, thats the right number of lights in Canada... Realism can be confusing cant it.

Its because there is nothing else in Canada - every light seems to shine for miles & miles

Still, why is the image so low res when its apparently "high res" ?

Uhhhh... The largest cities in northern Canada have like a population of 20,000......... please don't tell me you can see those from space. Toronto, New York, etc (with a population of erm... over 5,000,000) all look only two or three times bigger than the MANY lights in northern Canada. With these images it would seem like native Canadian tribes live in immense metropolitan cities. OH please
It is hard to believe those are real satellite images.
Edit: the new image still looks awesome! It is always good to assume Canadians will actually move north a bit... in time...

Hehe, well considering those are Real Images then the answer is yes. Now remember, over the large metropolitan cities is a lot of smog which absorbs light. So less makes it out. Where as in the remote areas the air is cleaner so the light comes through more readily.
Its really funny just how different reality is from our preceptions...

The brightest areas of the Earth are the most urbanized, but not necessarily the most populated. (Compare western Europe with China and India.) Cities tend to grow along coastlines and transportation networks. Even without the underlying map, the outlines of many continents would still be visible. The United States interstate highway system appears as a lattice connecting the brighter dots of city centers. In Russia, the Trans-Siberian railroad is a thin line stretching from Moscow through the center of Asia to Vladivostok. The Nile River, from the Aswan Dam to the Mediterranean Sea, is another bright thread through an otherwise dark region.

Also the pixellation was cause when turning the pictures into JPG.
The resourcer and game engine doesn't currently support TIF. I am trying to see if we can get that implemented.
JPG - 600k Pixellated when zoomed
TIF - 1.3 mb Extremely clear even when zoomed
TGA - 31 mb For the current game engine there is no difference in quality between the TGA and TIF
The game supports TGA, so by enabling TIF support we can have higher resolution planets. Have messaged F to look into it.

I like the blue Earth best... I like the that uses the satellite images... Question is how are you going to get all the other planets to look more realistic like Procyon 3... Since we dont have a satellite image of that. I guess you could just take a barren planet or moon and modify it a bit and cover the planet with the picture but dunno...

No lights needed for barren moons, Trekkie... And for Terran planets, you could just put lights around the bodies of water, and for ICe Planets, put them around the Equator.
Oh, and your sig, Trekkie, to get Scouts, you don't have to be subbed...
