Well, as I was modding up a disproportionately powerful ICC combat destroyer (8 level 8 railguns, 2 level 8 torps... ouch) I was thinking about how unbalanced the level system could end up making things. Then it hit me.

What if components didn't have a level? What if SLOTS had levels?

Think about it. Right now you can take a level 8 railgun off a dreadnought and put it on a scout. Scouts shouldn't be carrying dreadnought guns, energy drain or no.

Wouldn't it make more sense just to have the component slots have levels assigned to them? It could greatly simplify things (in a good way) while at the same time ensuring balance.

I follow your logic, and I totally agree with that logic, But could you tell me some more on how people are going to mod ships or.. is that it?

Because, If im seeing this right.( and im not the sharpest tool in the shed so help me out) Then a scout has lvl 0 slot which ='s lvl 0 rail gun/equip, and a dread has lvl 8 slots with lvl 8 gus/ equip...

so that being said the only thing to worry about is what to put in that slot acording to that certain slot types limits.

the only possible common ground that i can come up with would be to stager the lvls out in the classes.

like scouts would have 0-4 min to max slot lvls
Frigs would have 0-5 min/max
and dessys would have 0-6 min/max

so on and so forth...

but
Is there some way to satify realism and a good time?

bcus you and i both know that even a scout with LVL 8 armor isnt going to be the ship of choice for you or I when we can deal alot more damage with our respective dreads. But that newb that just started darkspace and wanted to give some support to the fleet would probably live a bit longer.

It doesnt matter about the weapons, the drain on those things is going to be stupidly high, that ICC ship wont run past a few alpha's.

Also Armour is set to calculate how much armour the ship has based on HULL. So a scouts level 8 armour is going to be A LOT weaker than a dreads level 8 armour. So it balances out.
