Haha, back in the old days...Suicide dread!..
Hey I do it..no shame in saying it... I play the game for my own enjoyment... and If it really shirts you off then don't get out a station.. It is a weakness of the station, inability to move, like the death star and those pesky fighters...(I don't really see the connection either...) Yeah I lose prestige, but thats not what this game is about, its about tactics and having fun... it is sometimes fun to do something stupid and suicide...
Meh, you'll probably flame me or something, but that's just my own opinion.. I really don't see what is wrong with the tactic... (excluding doing it maybe 30 times as that is sorta pushing it, but once or twice is ok in my opinion).

@ StarTroopers original post; because it does the job. and its not cheap. people do it to dreads too. it's completely valid to do it, mostly because you're probably about to die ANYWAYS, so you might as well do some damage. its not that theyre willing to sacrifice a ship for a station, its that they accidently sacrificed a ship and figure itd be good to do nastyness to the station in the vicinity
you see, circling a station at a distance is all well and good, but lets face facts here:
A) kluth and UGTO are only ones silly enough to bring stations to every large scale op when they could leave them behind.
B) if theres a kluth/UGTO station around, its because its a large scale op.
C) if its a large scale op, circling at a distance will soon find you running at a much closer distance from several other ships (this is true for any station battle)
D) its much easier to simply take a ship thatll survive the run and get under the station, then just back idly as that stations less-then-intelligent comrades blow it to high heavens
E) most people only do this because they were in a less-then-intelligent state of mind and blindly rushed to the middle of the enemy fleet when the rest of THEIR comrades hadnt actually been ready to charge yet
