I use a cable modem, and whenever i play or get into an intense battle, i my latensy always goes up to about 30000. I even turned the settings down to slow, even though this computer is almost new. what can i do to reduce lag?

One way of easing up the latency is turn down your FPS.... if you got it cranked up you are sending more and more data to the server (game) you might have really good data flow but unfortunately the current server is in need of an overhaul... We currently have a new server that will be installed shortly (not sure what the ETA is) but it should solve those horible lag spikes you mentioned....

Make sure that, in setup, you have wait VB enabled.... it is a good thing to have it on....

I usually keep the three slider bars at 50%... not much more than that is really needed...

On the options tab in setup you have connection speed and FPS limit.... Two Helpful Rules™....

#1 - Never set Connection speed to Auto Detect.... Manually select your connect speed closest to your actual connection.. this actually helped me...

#2 - See what yout FPS is currently and lower it down a notch... i had mine at 60 on a 56K dial-up and had lag issues... I lowered it to 30 FPS and got rid of half my lag problems...

Also... free up as much resident memory in your computer as possible... you have programs running and hogging up memory other than those showing on the task bar....

All these tings can help clear up any problems during your DS experiance....

Hope these tips help....

OH... ALso make sure your Cable Modem and Video Card has the latest drivers along with the latest version of DX.... I think it is DX9.0c or somting like that... all those things can do nothing but help...

This is something ive been complaining about over 5 weeks now, and nobody seemed to take it as nothing else but some kinda excuse..

you really cant do much about it, MV has started lagging with everyone, about every ICC complain every now and then...

FIX THE LAG.

Rocko, FPS is to do with your frame rate, not connection speed.

So lowering your FPS will not free up processor time to deal with data transfer thus maybe alowing a faster connection?

Or at least allow the game itself to flow smoothly, which essently translates to a faster runing game which some will see as a faster connection, even if its not

Only if your machine is struggling trying to display frames. Then by lowering your detail settings, you can free up cpu time for other things.

But the two arnt directly connected. I have 500 odd fps, if I cap mine to 90, it wont make a difference, because my machine can handle it.

30000 is extremely high, I don't even get that on a 56k. So first off, what's your average ping?

I'd be more inclined to check out the following;

Modem hardware/software. Reboot it, look for firmware updates and driver updates. Check for local IRQ conflicts too(unlikely tho)

Tracert to DS servers, compare it with other popular sites. If there is a timeout close to the first jump, you could change your ISP if poss.

Spyware? Common sense to check.

Check your firewall for incorrect settings.

Obvious, I know, but make sure windoze isn't doing it's update thang, or any other programs for that matter.

Off topic little bit..

Backy, I am on a super slow laptop, so I have enerything down or off Hope to get my real PC back today

On topic..

Perhaps if it is dialup, I remember something about MTU settings and other things?

I use a program called Netstat live, it watches my throughput on my connection. It only shows amount of data flow, but if your not doing anything online, and you see lots of data flowing.....

And A program called Ping Plotter, there is a free version. It will show ping times in a nice layout.

Not realy much help, but it may show where a slowdown is for you

@backie.... I only mentioned the FPS thing becuase, even though he said he had a new computer he didn't give any specifics about said computer... I mean he has a Cable modem... sure high bandwidth for sure but if he only has a shared video chip on the Mobo then yeah that little chippie is gonna drag everything down with it ... dropping the FPS for the Mobo based Vid CHip does wonderous things for latency... Found this out playing Madden Football on-line... Bought a new comp and thought it had a vid card in it when all it had was a vid chip....
