My Squadron, Helicopter Squadron Seven and some of her sister Squadrons are being flown to the area for Search And Rescue operations... I will probably have to go after I get off leave on the 6th... I am going to protect the Helicoters... That means I have to ride shogun in them and "Nutrualize any potitintial threats to the aircrew and the aircraft durring rescue operations in the New Orleans Theatre of Operations".

Yes it is true, there are people shooting at Army and Navy Blackhawks and the Coast Guard Dauphins....

Sad thought....

Shoot down your rescuers....

Ok. While there are many rumors flying about, a few things are a fact.

Last night the SuperDome actually turned people away. The night before, there were a few murders, a few rapes, and I've heard at least one cop was shot. The looting that began three days ago has continued. The cops are not running around rogue, they have pretty much just said "screw this". They weren't tasked with upholding the law, they were tasked with S&R. After they were shot at, they all basically went home and got their own families the hell out. I haven't heard anything at all about any cops looting, so I can't say about that. For the most part, the cops have just retreated.
Also there are various fires burning, and no water (believe it or not) or firemen to fight them.
Looters are hitting gun shops, hospitals, pharmacies, Best Buys, and pawn shops, as well as the various casino boats that have laned inland.
And another tidbit about New Orleans, and Louisianna in general. The water table in most places is about 3 foot down. Because of this, most people are buried in vaults above ground. Floods like this tend to cause them to shift, and sometimes they break open. Just a little more disease to hit the water. I fear for the people walking thru there with cuts or wounds.

At this time, there are National Gaurd units rolling into New Orleans, heading for the Super Dome. They have about 900,000 MREs with them, and more inportantly, they are packing M16's. I hate to see martial law declared here, but in this case, I see nothing else that works.

Most of the rest of the country hit by the 'cane is now pretty much dry. New Orleans was surrounded by 300 year old levees that broke, and basically Lake Pontchatrain now covers New Orleans. It will take a long time for all the water to drain there, because the waters from the north are emptying down right now, flooded from the storm.

While there have been so many demonstrations of the vilest of human behavior, there has also been some good things. Fats was rescued late last night. Houston has put up 20,000 people in the Astrodome, and are going to keep them there as the Red Cross and FEMA process them. They will be fed 3 good meals a day. Another Houstonian property owner has made available 3500 apartments available to refugees. They will be rent free for 60 days, furnished, and they will have food in the 'fridge when they arrive. The kids will also be allowed to enter the local schools. Texas as a whole has agreed to take in 75,000 Louisiannans displaced by the hurrican.

Personally, I grew up in Lake Charles, and have lived in Baton Rouge, New Iberia, Laffayette, and Sulphur. My ex wife and son have just moved back to Sulphur in fact. That's where I've heard alot about what's going on. I have been through three hurricans in my life, and what I see on the screen I am just stunned. At the same time, having stood on the very levee that broke, and looking out at the water, and back at the city, I guess it shouldn't be suprising to me.

I haven't seen Lord Drak about lately. I figure he's been really busy. He lives in Laffayette, I believe, and works for a TV station as a cameraman. Maybe he's over there right now. If so I would say he may be able to give the best account of anyone here.

Anyways, longwinded, but I tried to give a few facts about whats really happening.

PS. I see that a few small ships have moved in to fight the fires at the Port of Orleans now. NG units are moving in too. Is that a rainbow I see........?

Care to quote a source for that rather stupid number? or at least admit to a typo?
Wiki reports '10,000-239,000' missing, not dead.

Last I read, it was a Cat1 storm. A 'slight breeze' compared to Katrina.

my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the people still traped in new orleans and in the many refugee camps.

Its amazing if you compare this with 9/11. 9/11 brought people together but this is just the opposite, gun violance, rape, looting, sucides the list is almost endless...
