I'm doing some research for a book, but the information I am searching for online keeps giving me links to the DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE or HOMELAND SECURITY...which are of diddily help to me...
I am looking for a list of the departments within a navy ship, in particular the individual systems onboard (by title or whatchamacallit) a ships bridge.
For example I know there is: Helm and Navigation, Communications, Weapons. I know there is others but I cannot remember what their titles are (i.e. the title for those who operate a radar). There must be title other than calling out like " Radar, "
A list of other ship departments down to position would be helpful. In my past works (all for the pleasure of it and to practice my writing skills), I have used the system found on the Star Treks (Ops, Tactical, Helm). These are okay, but since what I'm attemtping to work on is an original piece, I'd like to try and get certain aspects as correct as possible.
Note: What I'm attempting to write maybe be space-based sci-fi, I want some kind of authenticity to part of it at least. And no wise cracks please...I'm asking a professional question.

No real rush...
I'm trying to muddle a way out of my writer's block anyway...
Hopefully that block will end...permanently when my package of Babylon 5 (ALL 5 SEASONS) arrives that I bought on ebay for $89.

Bridge...Main control area
Quarterdeck..primary area for special functions.accessing ship while in port(where the watch ie Security stands guard and grants permission to board or disembark)
CIC...Combat Information Center..where all info pertaining to radar/sonar ship location heading speed course and such is gathered/sent...also serves as Damage control on smaller ships which is responsible for fire/combat damge fighting co-ordination.
Wardroom..Officers mess..dining room for officers only and their guests.
Fire Control...NOPE.....they DONT control fires....lol......they control the GUNS/weapons of the ship.
Engineroom....selfexplainatory
Helm...the Actual Wheel the Boatswains Mate or Quartermater stands at to steer the ship...it is NOT a room(space)
rooms are not rooms...they're spaces....floors are decks....ceilings are overheads.....walls are bulkheads....stairs are ladders.....bathrooms are heads....to figure out what deck you are on....if you are below the maindeck...from it count down 1..2...3....if above....its..01...02...03...(really only applies to carriers....otherwise its always just 1..2..3........so if your on the 3rd deck.....your 3 decks down from the top
oh.....bow..front of ship.....you know....pointy end....

Since I am the only one I can think of that is still active in the US Navy I am going to get some websites for you to look at that describe how a ship (in the US Navy) is set up... who does what and that such. I am at home right now but will have access to the whole Navy database when I get to work... The Rank Structure that Fatal Command mentioned above is correct as of right now for Force Structure currently.
Otherwise I will get you what you need and then some.

Actually stairs are refered to as "Ladder Wells"
"Set condition Zebra throughout the ship" - refers to closing all water and airtight hatches, done in rough seas and battle.
Though phoentic Alphabet "Z" is "Zulu" since "Zulu" is used to mark Zero time, ie, time zone 0 - Greenwhich mean time, Zebra is used to differentiate on ships between time and closing all hatches.
The Main deck on Amphib and Carrier ships is identified by the location of the hanger bay.
The Hanger bay (and typically mess halls) are the 01 level, 02 level is typically admin offices and officer billetting.
Decks below the 01 are refered to by number alone. Those at and above are refered to as "Oh-One", etc. there isnt a 1 and 01, numbering goes from keel up, 5, 4, 3, 2, 01, 02, 03, 04, etc
Location on the ship are identified by Port and Starboard designations, and further identified by Frame number (Fore and Aft are not normally used becaues of generalization). So if a fire erupts in a stateroom in "Officer Country" (Officer Berthing), the call might come across the "Squakbox"...
"General Quarters, General Quarters, Class Bravo fire... 0-2 level aft of frame 73 starboard side."
If its a dedicated workspace such as Engine room, CIC, SCIF, etc, they will simply call out the rooms designation instead of Frame number.

TAel... on a CVN Mess Dexk is on 2nd Deck... and some officers (airwing type) have these Mess on the 03 level

Fixed the links.
As for the mess decks, if you want to get specific, CVN's have 5 or more mess decks spread through out the ship.
As i stated in my information, it mainly refered to Amphibious ships. Carriers have a much larger hanger bay than an Amphib ship.
Every Amphibious ship I have been on, the main mess deck has been either on the same level as the Hanger bay, with a walkway leading from the Hanger Bay to the Mess Hall, or on the main deck/base deck where the helo platforms were, again with a passage going from the helo pad straight into the mess hall.
The Mess deck on the 01 level is the general crew mess deck. Officers nearly always have their own mess. Only on small ships are they combined.
