Howdy,

The Problem:

I type in my info, it loads for a second, and then it gives me an error. the error involves the program gcql.exe and the module mfc42.dll according to windows.

Attempts at resolution:

I reinstalled this program several times, wiping the registry each time, my system runs well for other games but for this one, it seems that I cannot get past the login and into the lobby. I was browsing the messege boards for days, and trying everything there to no avail

Specs

my computer is running windows XP home SP2
AMD 4000+
1GB DDR RAM
NVIDIA Mobo and Video Card ( NForce 4 and PCX 5750)
I have a cable connection and I use the firewall provided with the motherboard.

Nice things that should never be left out

I would be in your debt if you came up with a solution, I was browsing the messege boards for days, and trying everything there to no avail. I am absolutly in love with this game and I cannot wait to play it again! Thanks in advance!

Signed,
Pliki

Try unloading the Firewall till you get into the lobby and hit the update button. Seems the Auto-Updater (which tries to d/l a few core files) sometimes has an issue with firewalls.... I would also run a adware/spyware remover too... I recommend AdAware... works well for me and tends to keep the cobwebs out of the computer... Also make sure any and all drivers (PC related, DX, Chipset, Video, Sound and the like) are up to date on your PC... This may not help with the log-in problem BUT will help you when we do get you into the game...

Nope, tried it and the exact same thing happened, scanned with adaware, then turned off firewall (both windows and NVIDIA) and started game, exact same problem.

Lol, you should run anti-virus now, to look for the host of worms that are no-doubt on you Hd.

Hmm, is that AMD one of the new dual-core thingies? Has DS been tested on that or a dual chip board by anyone else? just so we can rule it out as the cause.

Ran an AV and found no worms or viruses, and no, it is not a dual core, it is a single core proccessor.

Again same problem.

Hey, I take offense to that remark about my hd!
:Sprays worm-be -gone again:

I'm wondering how you got to Captain rank if you cant play..

Anyway, try taking a screenshot of the error and posting it here. You can sae the immage on immageshack(?.com?), so they may better help.

Hi there......i don't know if this will help you but I was told by my teacher you can somehow program your firewall to aloud darkspace to be active.....so since your firewall comes with your program try to see if you can aloud darkspace to be accessed....some how your firewall is stopping you from accessing it.......look threw your menu bars and see if you can find a place where you can active it......i will ask my teacher more about this firewall and see if i can help you with your problem.

Delete mfc42.dll and let GCQL re-download it.

If all else fails, download this:

www.ravenwarriors.com/darkspace/gcql.7z

This has the bare minimum of GCQL files needed to run.

If you need up-to-date DLL's if more cause problems...

www.ravenwarriors.com/darkspace/DarkSpace.7z

yok, the firewall has been off for all of this, and tried those tow things, nothing, in fact the exact same error, even when I moved all of the DS files to another folder and unzipped the GCQL.7v file to the DS folder, this is quite perplexing as it did not even include mfc42.dll...

Again, thanks soo much for the help, I really appreciate it.

refortmat.....or delete DS including the registry then reinstall.

well, is your processor 32 or 64 bit and if 64 bit are you using 3rd party 64 bit drivers?

http://www.techadvice.com/w98/M/mfc42_dll.htm
and a direct link to MS
http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vc/mfc42.cab

Wth, why do some people always fall back on 'reformat your C drive!'.

The 64-bit thing though, maybe. But I'm sure others have 64bit and run DS.

In that 'error report', could you please click for technical information and post the results. That screenshot just shows microsoft promising not to steal your soul.
