Yeah. Newbie here

Step #1: Download!

I downloaded the newest version
[DarkSpace 1.483 (50MB) palestar.com mirror 07/10/2005 7875 Faustus]

Step#2: Install / Register an account

Done without any hitches, was considering paying but hey, gotta check out the game first

Step#3: PLAY the game!

So when I hit DarkSpace it says "Updating connecting to mirror.palestar" in a progress window

Then pops up CANT CONNECT TO SERVER SERVER MAY BE DOWN [onoz!}

Step#4: Well lets try this here tutorial!

Same thing, but hey whatev, it seems to magically work. I then go through the tutorial and when i have to enter the Navigation screen. ONOZ! CRASH!

Edit: I will put this in SUPER BIG BOLD FONT
/voddo praying magic to the gods BOLD

Can you connect to the Lobby?
/unvoddo
No, I can't connect ot the GameCQ server.

when you get to the lobby, manually click "update" next to play.

that should help.

I thought you meant selected tutorial from the lobby menu.

Try going into the lobby again, make sure it's not blocked by your firewall or anything (I know gcql.exe uses port 80)

yeah, but the game needs to manually update via the lobby, cause 1.483 isn't the latest version (it's 1.483.6)....

I think theirs an update.exe in your /Palestar/Darkspace/ folder

1.483 is the correct version.

You won't be able to run the client.exe (the game) because you don't have the correct files, and there's an old version in the installer and auto update is broken (hence everyone says CLICK UPDATE when you enter the lobby for the first time (otherwise your client crashes)).

As for the disconnects, I can only assume that the path from you to the server is borked somewhat (mirror-palestar anyway). First and formost, are you running on a router? If so, there may be a firewall on there stopping you from connecting to the GCQL server correctly. Secondly, are you sure you're not running a firewall? Windows XP (SP2) comes with a firewall automaticly on, so perhaps you have that on and need to allow GCQL access to the intarwebs.

If all else fails I can only think of uninstalling, downloading and reinstalling.

Mirror Update (currently havent tested it)

More Info

When i run Darkspace and hit lobby i get this

First Screen:

Name: Client Update
Window One descirption: Progress bar it says "connecting to mirror-server.palestar.com: 9100

Window two (error window): Failed to connect ot server, server may be down

Second Screen

Window One: Connecting to GameCQ Server

Window two (error Window): Failed to connect to GameCQ server, please try again.

Unfortuantely i have to leave for an hour, I hope I provided enough information.

try running a tracert or ping to mirror-server.palestar.com, see what happens. Maybe theirs some kind of problem along the way.

I'm stumped, maybe when you get back somebody else would have posted by now something i haven't thought up of.

What it's trying to do is check for GCQL updates, which it can't do, and then try and connect to the GCQL server for login, which it can't do either. This indicates that there is some problem on your end on establishing a connection with the palestar servers.

Are you on a router? If so, unblock ports 9000-9200, see if it can connect then.

I uploaded all the exe's and dll's in the DS directory for you to download:
http://www.ravenwarriors.com/darkspace/DarkSpace.7z If you're a 56k, then you just want the GCQL only files (to try and get to the lobby), so just head over too http://www.ravenwarriors.com/darkspace/gcql/ and replace the files in the DS directory with the ones there.

You need winrar to open it (www.rarlabs.com), and then extract and replace.

You should find a config.ini file in the darkspace directory, if not create one and open it with notepad and enter the following:

[GCQL]
AcceptedEULA=1
doUpdate=0
ChatBufferSize=100000
TextSize=8
ChatColor=65535
ChatSound=1
RefreshGameListTime=60000000
RoomAnnounce=1
AlwaysLog=0
AutoAwayTime=300
Language=1
AutoLogin=0
SkinColor1=2105376
SkinColor2=3158064
SkinColor3=4210752
SkinColor4=1052688
SkinColor5=2105376
SkinColor6=4210752
GripperColor1=2105376
GripperColor2=16777215
TextColor=16777215
GrayedTextColor=4210838
StatusColor=8421504
WatchListWidth=0
WatchListHeight=0
loginCount=0
rememberPW=0

Save the file, and then try and connect to darkspace again. Instead of checking for updates, it should skip that and go directly to login, which you can try. If it fails to contact the palestar servers, we'll need to check your router (if you have one), or perhaps it's your ISP.
