The main thinking behind it is the time it takes for players to modify a ship and it is a form of saving a ship design. Many players spend an hour modding thier ships, only to lose them the same evening. Then they have to spend another hour remodding exactly the same layouts.

Considering DarkSpace is supposed to be action based, it doesn't really fit that players should have to spend so much time ccontinually remodding ships.
Saving a ship design has been a reasonable common request since shipyards were introduced, and so the Dev team came up with this solution.
Credit loss is not really an issue here.

A lot of the new upgrade path system is also designed to make the game more user friendly and intuitive to new players. Hence you no longer need to build gadgets before you can buy/upgrade to them. you simply need to orbit a friendly planet, right click on a device, and a list of all the available upgrades will be displayed above the target info panel. To change to that upgrade, you simplY have to select it.

Of course, there are also some requirements that have to be met for certain upgrades, for instance the planet needs the appropriate technology level to provide different gadgets.

For some specialist upgrades, the planet might also require a certain resource flag (IE Hypermatter or Darkmatter), but these restrictions have not yet been introduced.
