That makes no sense borgie. Instead of actually using skill and technique lets just go ahead and take a peep and just know where everyones at and what ships they're in. It ruins the game play and fleet battles. Its a good way to abuse the game and take away the element of surprise and skill.

How is it my fault? I was cloaked. Using the Observe option ISNT a good way of knowing what and who your fighting, that isnt how it was ment to be used. As tael said, it was made to Observe the game, not cheat around the cloak to find and kill an opponent.

Still don't see the point in an action based RPG-esque space combat game...

Never saw another MMO out there that has observe. In fact, the only game - ONLY game that comes to mind that has an observe function that is used reletively fairly is Counter Strike. Mainly because the maps are small the games are short and there is no lasting impact other than a number on the scoreboard. You can't be demoted if someone finds you in CS or anything. In fact you're just as likely to be dead if someone uses observe in CS to find you as you would be if they just lucked upon you the maps are so small.

Point being that DS is far too big, complex, and costly (in terms of pres loss for capital ships & whatnot) a game to have an observe function without expecting that it WILL BE EXPLOITED! No matter what intention you may have for it I can promise you that no one has ever used observe without malicious intent. Because its just not worth it. As was said, spawn an extractor & camera someone - not only will you get far better pictures (You can actually CHOOSE what to see!) you won't be betraying other factions, and you will get to chat with people. Wheres the advantage of Observe if it is to be used fairly and as intended? So you can see other factions? Isn't that an exploit right there?

Just to point out...

Sometimes they black out the observe option in CS because it CAN be unfair to those using teamspeak or ventrilo.

Don't bump a beta discussion thread if you have nothing to add to it.

my point is that i think all has been said about observe, and the only logical conclusion out of the arguements given here, is that it has to go.
So id like some developer feedback if they are thinking about removing it at all, or they are going to ignore this thread.

Then there was no need to bump it, and now the development team can discuss it .

I am in favour of disabling Observer Mode if you are currently logged in as a ship. I have played around with tracking by OM and it is not as difficult as it may sound.
Each system has it's own unique star signature. Combine this with tracking by gas giant location and other nearby objects and you can get reasonably accurate fix.

Keep OM in the game, by all means. But disable it if you aren't docked.

That would be the best possible solution. I'm for this.

The Observe Option should be Kept.

But Its Use shouldnt be allowed to everyone. Admin, Mods, and Possibly Fleet Leaders should retain the use of this.

I would really hate to see this thrown away becuse of a possible Miss use of this tool/option.

And As for watching people, Yes I have a multiple computer setup in my basement along with a 32 inch tv that "observes" like a TV channel. Its really cool, I highly suggest you set up a command center for yourselves.

How about make it to where you can Observe friendly/neutral Planets/Ships/Stars? You'd still be able to observe things, but you wouldnt be able to find the enemy using it..

one problem with that; starting on a scenario server before picking a team, or being fleetless in the mv (same deal)... what's friendly when you're not any team?

therein lies a problem, it leaves observe to fleeted members only. noone even uses observe anyway for good....i say we remove it. i certainly won't miss it.
