Captains Log: The Black Pearl : [July 16, 2266]

The shadows. They came at us out of nowhere. A nightmare beyond comprehension. Our thoughts and memories, thier claws tearing through the innermost sanctity of our minds.
Most of my crew are dead, the remainder reduced to madness and insanity. Only myself, Watson(an ex-captain with a bad stutter) and a junior drive technician called Tilley have survived. We can only guess that the drive plasma shielded us from the worst of the shadows onslaught.
Yet our dreams remain haunted, those terrible visions - so alien, so intimate - like maggots borrowing through our thoughts.

The life support is failing. We will be lucky if we can survive for more than another 40 hours, and without an effective crew there is no way we can even contemplate making repairs. We are stuck in the lower engineering section. Trying to venture out is suicide in itself. The rest of the crew have descended into an almost feral state. Rape, murder, cannibalism and torture. Human depravity at its most horrific.
It is already below freezing, and without the dampers online we are limited to coasting at sublight speeds.

Our hopes of rescue are slim. We have always moved in secrecy, as is the way of our kind. Yet now our very means of survival, of how we live, will curse us into our graves. There has always been a risk associated with piracy. But to perish in such a manner?

Who could have known that we were not alone?

Captains Log: The Black Pearl : [July 17, 2266]

We now have less than 20 hours of life support remaining. Our attempts at creating an atmospheric scrubber have failed miserably.

I fear the return of the shadows, yet I long for them. I lack the courage to end my own suffering, to pre-empt my own certain demise. After everything I have done throughout my life, all the murders, the thieving and the backstabbing, I have finally found a path that I cannot bare to follow of my own free will. I have mercilessly taken the lives of thousands, yet now I cannot perform the simple task of taking my own.

The shadows have changed me. I see myself now - for what I am - for what I have become.

Captains Log: The Bl$ck Pearl : [July 18, 2266]

This is the last entry that I shall be able to write. We have managed to assemble a rudimentary transmitter beacon, although it is too late to hope for rescue. All I can do now is issue a warning to all of humankind. And maybe to grant some of you a gift, a small measure of atonement for my brutal actions.
The warning - "Beware of the shadows."
I cannot say any more, or any less. The horror of them is indescribable.
And now for the gif* - my fortune.

I cannot in all conscience lay claim to it for any longer. And maybe, with this, I can be granted some small restitution.
Who would have thought that I, Robin McCormic, the infamous Pirate Lord and scourge of the voids would be reduced to this one simple plea, this one hope?

So, my bounty - a centuries worth of plunder, to whomever may find it first.
I have secr%ted it on two stations in deep space - both drifting through the voids between stars. Those cold, silent and desolate spaces. They travel slowly towards the vortex, the whirlpool, where eventually they will be torn apart.
Tortuga was to have beeen the final destination, and the beginnings of a new empire. Yet without control or guidance, the stations will surely be l^st.
Originally, the stations were postion d on the #ump pat^ betwe£$ sy$3ems, but by now they "i3l ha e mov£d.
