I have a friend who has a 900mhz computer with 128mb of ram running windows XP (His parents don't really find a need for a 'new' computer, and they still get kicks out of playing AoE2). I am getting a new processor this christmas, so i'm giving him my 2.4ghz. a new video card down the line and a stick of RAM would make him the happiest nerd I know

Props to you for doing this (seriously), but I'd rather give it to someone I know. I hope you can understand that. It's also a PCI-Express card, so I doubt his motherboard could take it.

warner, one problem about going Intel....i HATE intel....when AMD comes out with their own version of the C2D, AMD will beat Intel yet again.

Bad to be a fanboy....well AMD did try it best with a new system, the 4x4 platform, and failed.
You'll be waiting a long time for a decent AMD processor it seems.
Just compared FX-60 to C2D, the e6400 would be equal(and a little bit better) for less than half the price
in finland fx-60 is about 460€ and e6400 about 220€
for that 240€ you would get lots of goodies.....and c2d's are real beasts to overclock.
But sure, i won't be telling you to go intel if you just have to stay with AMD, just suggesting you'd save some money going inwel, being a fanboy when it comes to computers just isn't very smart.

Jack, thats a nice offer of you. Seriously. Me, well, I have an x300. It rocks...well, it shakes...actually, it jiggles a little bit. But I still <3 it. I think there might be someone we know that could use it. Rocko maybe. I thought he mentioned something about needing a better comp. Vid card could start him out.

Depends on your budget. depends ALOT on you budget.
Processor:
Need two cores?(several processes running at once?)= Intel Core 2 Duo. E6300 - E6600
Happy with one core? = AMD. older socket 939's go cheap. but maby best to go with the newer socket AM2 (get to use DDR2 memory) for future upgradeabilty
Probably going to need a better, and quiter than stock, cooler:
Scythe Infinity/Noctua NH-U12F for good performance.
Graphics:
My fav currently is nvidia, we all know what jack says....
Average:7600GT, forget about 7600GS
Good: 7900GT - 7900GTO(if you can find a good GTO, it's overclocking potential is nice)
Excellent: 7900GTX-7950GX2
Over the top: 8800GTS - 8800GTX with direct x 10 compatibility. IMHO, no idea getting one yet, prices will drop rapidly as soon as ATI gets it's own dx10 card out.
Motherboard.
Currently favoring ASUS with easy BIOS upgrading, maby the P5B DH Deluxe for C2D(pricey)
For budget AMD processors there's so many decent ones to list, maby A8N line
Memory:
1-2GB, 512mb is basically too little, especially if you plan to go for windows vista. Basic models will suffice for most, but if you plan to overclock, some quality DDR won't be wrong. Corsair has nice memory.
ofcourse you'll need harddrives, depending on you need. 250GB's go at decent prices.
Need a case?
Antec P180/150 is a nice and quiet one and has sufficient airflow, plus you get a decent power supply unit with them.
but whatever looks good in your eye...

The 4x4 isn't even out yet, and they've already proven it can run 4 games along side one alother simultaniously. I wouldn't call that fail, would you ?

| Unfortunately, considering the effort required to bring this platform into life, the results aren't terribly impressive in terms of both performance and performance per watt. Why should I buy a pair of processors, an expensive and very special motherboard and a heavy duty 1,000 W power supply when I can get almost the same experience with much cheaper mainstream components and Intel's quad core processor? Sure, I won't be able to upgrade an Intel machine to eight cores by the middle of 2007, but AMD's Quad FX powerhouse will be outdated by that time as well. HyperTransport 3.0, with double the clock speed, is waiting for its spring debut, and although the quad core Agena FX will run in today's Quad FX systems, it will have to live with standard HT link speeds. |

@Tomsharware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/11/30/brute_force_quad_cores/page13.html
Using WAY more power and still only marginally faster than core 2 quad, and price/performane isn't that lovely....
Only if it would have beaten intel in all aspects would i call it a success.
And were talking about two processors here, the motherboard won't be a cheap baby either.
Do you think 1000W PSU will be enough? not cheap.
2 coolers. not cheap.
Can't find a single reason to choose 4x4 over intels quad, as that's what AMD is trying to beat with it. that's why i call it a failure.

Might be worth reading all of that you know. The fact that no application in existance except Vista can use as much bandwidth as the Quad FX offers, and they havn't tested it under that yet, nor did they test it under 64bit.
Also try to remember, they've already got HT3.0 ready for the line in Spring, which will boost AMD well above Intel. 4x4 is still being developed, these are simply entry-level chips, designed to show what their LOWEST performing chips can do. The reason they're so expensive, is because they're aimed at enthusaists, and every company is trying to pull in as much money as possible, what, with christmas and all (and if you really want a price comparison, do the math and you'll see that the C2D chips in the test are actualy more expensive than the 4x4 cores).
Should of read the entire article, and done some extra research elsewhere. They're not the true 4x4's, just an odd buy one, get one free deal.

True 4x4 will come in Spring, along with HT3.0. Remember, you're paying £300 for TWO dual-core processors, instead of one quad core, which they'll released in Q2, 2007.
