My turn.... The eight I would pick to stand by my side in a fight and why... not necessarily in order of importance.
#1 - Smartin - This man knows what ship to use and when to use it. One hell of a pilot and has a good head on his shoulders. Always knows just when to jump into the middle of the frey and save my butt...
#2 - Coeus - Even thought he can be hot headed at times always has a word of encouragement to the new players to stick it out and get better ships. Oh and that rampaging AD of his is good in a pinch... I rememebr him in his AD and my Kluth modded MD running amuck in UGTO space...
#3 - Tarnkep - This lady knows how to save peoples bacon. Fine pilot with a cool head on her shoulders. Always seems to pop out of nowhere when you need her the most.
#4 - Doran - What can you say about the man. One of the most aggressive Supply Ship pilots I have ever had the pleasure of flying with. Have seen him drive off Destroyers and Cruisers with that thing in previous versions.
#5 - Starfist - Fine pilot who always seems to know just were the enemy is hiding and how to pounce on them when they least expect it... A one man wrecking crew.
#6 - Mad Bum - This guy is just evil with Kluth ships period. I have not once had the pleasure of flying with him but I can truely say from all the combat against him I would love to have this guy on my team.
#7 - Fatal Command - took me in while I was such a noob and showed me the ways to get things done. I remember him and his fearless supply station on a slow approach to a planet, all the way haveing two sups on him so he would suck up the planets defence so we could land troops on it (pre-1.483 days). That was one brave station pilot. Wasn't afraid to tell you you screwed up but was just a quick to praise for a job well done.
and #8 is a name many may not remember but was one of my first full time wingmen...
Genghis Conn of the 181st Combat Squadron. This had to be one of the funniest, bravest, totally on the edge insane pilots I have ever had the wild pleasure of flying with. His ship would be on fire, would jump in, make the kill and some how make it out again, only to do it again and again. I miss flying with him. Maybe some day he will come back and you that have never flown with him can have the pleasure.

8.) Queen nano...ya i know her mane changed, i dont remember it, but i miss flying with her...shes a fun wingman, or wingwoman should i say.

Okay, now for the real list.. =P
Coues - One of the best pilots I've ever had the chance to fly with, and against. I'd have him backing me up any day.
Smartin - Him and Leo are tied for the best combat pilot to come out this version. He's always there and willing to help out in a bad situation.
Leonide - Well, he's just a good combat pilot. Figure he could save my arse any day..
$ythe - Easily one of the best pilots in the game. Not much to say after that.. Oh, Claws.
$witch - Same as above... Claws 
Polaris - Not the best known combat pilot I geuss, but someone I'd trust in a bad situation.
Lacrossian - Another unkown in combat realy, but I've had a lot of fun flying with him. And it's a freaking oyster..
Enterprise - One of my oldest friends on Darkspace, sort of. Back in the days of *Myth* and the time I was in GTN, we'd have a ball.
Too bad I cant post everyone I've had a chance to fly with..

Nim - Need I really say more. First player I really flew with.
Smartin - Never had the pleasure of flying with him, but is always a hassle when flying against.
Red Dragon - Another one of the people I originally flew with. Always has your back, good pilot.
Virus - Able to take command. Oldy but goody, as far as time playing this game.
Backslash - Got to give the guy props.
Coeus - Always bringing the cheese, throws his ships at the enemy even when at a disadvantage.
Crim - Whatever you say Clam. Combat ftw?
Feralwulf - Combat suppy anyone? The late nights defending systems we had just aquired; this is way back when mind you.

only 8? hmmm
1. Nim- he taught me practicly all i know about dread combat and had a blast playing with him back in 482.
2. feralwulf- hehehe escorting u while u bombed in a CD was always a blast and just flying with ya is fun
3. smartin- a friend who has been around just as long as i have and has once again proven that age in this game has no meaning. You are a honorable player and a great friend who was there right beside me back when u were a uggy in VCA. (yes u were VCA once upon a time)
4. Maskerade- my my, where to start. We have some awsome battles in 482 that i still remember to this day. It was always fun to fly against u in battle and you are one of the most honorable players ive ever met.
5. Red Dragon- ahh my friend you too have been a great opponent and an even greater friend We still have to duel (just remembered) so no definite on how well u are in combat
6. Tim webbers- hehehhe my apprentice indeed! Ah tim i remember when u first joined this game and i basicly taught u how to get from sol out to banards lol. You are a great player and an even better friend.
7. No71171- hmmm you are the only person who started at the very same time i did, was in newbie with me till Commander, and yet STILL managed to beat me in every rank your a psychotic player who always got me out a sticky situation.
8. Bash- well, what can i say other than good fight? heh you are up there on the top 10 list of 'most favorite people to duel' hehehe. You carry the same honorbound character that Ants has
To those not mentioned....
Dont feel excluded! Especially to my greatest friends on VCA!!! If i got to add 100 people i could probably get there and have a waiting list for a post on ur favotire 300
Thank you all who have been there longer and not as long as i have, youve made this game quite worth it

Yeah, there are literally dozens of great pilots out there that no longer play (or in Quistys case, the ability throw very large and concret muffins at people in the place of torpedos).
On that note, I should possibly run away lest she kill me...
