After a few hours of the best DS I have played in several months, here is my evaluation of the DarkSpen Inc. Server:

Gameplay: We collectively decided to play all ships with no modding and no upgrading of any kind (not even engines). Straight stock ships. How they spawned is how we battled. It was FANTASTIC! A hull damage and losing systems didn’t mean you were seconds from death. You could turn and repairs systems in-battle! Weapons weren’t strong enough to wipe you out that fast. We also rediscovered the bane of energy management. The balance was PERFECT. Small ships could evade but couldn’t take many hits from big ship guns. I highly recommend upgrading (and even modding perhaps) be banned from the real servers until 484! It fixes the game!

Map: Large, but small enough to be simple and combat-ready. The enemy SY planets are about a 30-40 sec jump away from each other. Some planets/moons are in live motion. VERY well lit. I could see everything, for once. Lacking in nebulae. One big one of those would be cool.

Lag: Lag was exactly similar to that in the MV and admiral servers. It was smooth under small battles but given blazing battlefield conditions, screen freezes and ships hopping around start to dot the battle. No better than the MV, but no worse either.

i agree with Kanman... a DS with no upgrading and no modding works... if given the right ship layout. and for once the ICC Assault dread PWNED. hardcore. noone tried an EAD though. but i highly reccommend going into Darkspen's server.....

and yeah.. can you make more of a MV-style map, Darkspen? it would make it better than just going to the SY planet and fighting. and one other thing... darkspen's server beats the official Palestar servers by a longshot now.

/me hopes this convinces everyone that modding isn't absolutely necessary.

yeah.. modding is not necessary to have fun in DS. plain old stock ships actually balance the game. it also does this:

1. you don't lose as much prestige when you die. an unmodded unupgraded dreadnought only costs you 100 prestige points.

2. a lot more fun. no more overpowered ships.... ( IE the ICC scout. it dies in one alpha. and gets rid of the escort/pickett issue)

3. bombing will be harder. having an unupgraded unmodded ship means less armor. and there are a LOT of missiles coming at you. it also promotes team bombing, like in the old days.

4. it makes the AD/Siphon/EAD pwnination once again. in darkspen's server map, Sythe and switchblade owned with the AD's. they actually really hurt people.

5. it makes .483 PLAYABLE.

May I just add that this is not a proper server, and that given a proper metaverse-style map, it would crash very often due to the CPU usage constantly hitting 100%.

Keep the maps small, and in my honest oppinion, make it a scenario server.

he probably means that even an idiot can do damage with the ic now.

don't need to take enemy armor into account if its not modded aye.

I agree that DarkSpen's server would be best suited to a Senario map. Maybe not a jumble of planets like it is now, and not a full giant MV, but rather just a single, well-designed system.

Keep the system realistic and natural looking (as in hot formulaicly equal for all three factions) but still fair to all sides. Refer to the systems in the Admiral server for ideas on how to do this. I really like that map with Little Boonie and stuff. Aside from the lack of some minerals, it is a good map.

One feature that would be good is to keep it running for a while so the SYs stay built. The Admiral sucks because it restarts so often. Let your server run on a system for like a week, then change to a fresh system. That would be cool.

you need to be able to mod.... has anyone actually looked at some of the setups? the majority of ships are useless without changes

upgrading however, should be limited so that a scout cant survive multiple alphas from a dread

we should still be able to modify the layout of our ship...but only if the object that was first equipped was replaced by an object of equal level of the original (modification level slot = stock level slot). Just an idea though...
