Would someone please explain, in precise terms, what the 'back-end' is? People are referring to it with varying concepts of its use and I have no idea what it even is or what F has to do to it....

Well, the back end is the part that handles the resources and communicates them with the other parts. Its like a brain, you cant see it, but it does the work. It is the server software basically.
EDIT: also, the GCQL chat program, map editor, and things of the such would be the front end.

"The backend" is the softward and/or hardware that run the servers.
For instance, Faustus is currently re-writing the server code for DarkSpace, so it'll work slightly differently and hopefully improve the latency and decrease de-sync, and other sorts of lag happening. We refer to this as "Faustus is working on the backend", since he's working on the software that runs on the servers to power the DarkSpace servers.
He could also (like he's just currently done), installed a firewall, and re-configured the servers to work a little differently. We also refer to this as "Faustus is working on the backend", since he's working on the hardware - the servers themselves.
That awnser your question?
And on the subject at hand, I was playing earlier, and I noticed not one tiniest bit of lag. I did de-sync once (although I was being impatient and hit spacebar very early on in the loading process, so it was probably my fault).

The arc bug isn't lag related, it's to do with the same sort of bug that causes an entire planet to become barren when you use a few mirvs.
Cannons = lots of damage. When their threshold is hit, the arc bug forms.
You don't see the arc bug with torps, or few cannons (or many un-upgraded ones), because they dont do enough damage.

Sounds like there's an issue on your end then. Did you press spacebar when DS was loading? That can cause issues.
