Hard Drive Jumpers (Updated with another stumper) |

Hey everybody. I've got a stumper for you all.
I've got here a 80GB hard drive, that, uh, fell off the back of a truck, let's say.
The problem is, it's missing the jumpers for it (I need to set it secondary slave, luckly theirs a diagram on the HDD itself)
Now, I tried installing it without the jumpers, but my computer woudn't even turn on (!), so I quickly took everything out and my computer is no working again.
My question, to you all is, where the hell can I buy one jumper for a hard drive?

Sata FTW!
Now on topic, I would assume it would be best to contact the manufacturer about obtaining jumpers. I assume this is a IDE hardrive because SATA does not need jumpers, at least SATA2 does not.

Buy a piece of wire - or find one. Works just the same. It's only accessed on computer boot, and determins its place on the boot timer (1,2,3,4,5,6, etc). Just bridge it with a piece of metal, or a wire and it will work just fine.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes, it is a IDE drive.
anyway, I have an old 100 in 1 kit from radioshack back in the hay-day that has some nice strips of metalic wire that are cut real short and have plastic lining around them that might work.
Otherwise, i'm going to look into Ramius's suggestion.

just find a old unused motherboard that is old enough that it stil has jumpers.
rip all jumpers off and use mobo as decorating tool in your room or trough in with garbage.
you got your self some jumpers.
I got my self a little bottle full with jumpers i reccon about 400.
this way i never need to look for more.
P.s.
A (computer) jumper is a jumper there all standardized sizes.

Okay, so, I put the jumper in correctly. Now, after hooking everything up, I turned the power on
nothing. Except a small buzzing noise. the red light that signals "data" or "reset" on my box stayed on.
After removing the HDD and wires, it worked fine.
I have no idea waht this means. I cannot snuggly secure the HDD, because the way my case is, so I have it leaning on one HDD (one screw is supporting it, but the back end of it, which has the jumper/data/power links is down low near my C: drive)
So, any idea what is going on? Is it short-circuting?

just some checkes to prefent stupidity.
1 there are no more than 2 deviced on the ide cable to the mobo.
2 the 5.25 power plug is connected to the drive.
3 you used the right jumper position.
(some oldies had a underlying jumper position misconfiguration resulted in drive IDE controler melting.)
4 dous the mobo give a beep. (if interna speaker is connected if anny.)
other than that.
the 1.3 voltage to the bios (mobo) might be to low or under amped this can be caused if the PSU is not enough for all devices.
second the IDE controler on the harddrive might be broken resulting in a error on the IDE lane back to the southbridge halting the southbrige before the bios has a chance to even finish its check of the southbridge.
third defective IDE cable can result in the same error to the southbridge.
fourth the IDE controler on the mobo might be damaged in a way tot nor allow a second device on the IDE lane resulting in the same error as above.

Checked. I have two two IDE cables, one is full, and the other has one slot open (I have two 40gb HDD's and one DVD-R drive)

I remember noticing it was a bit loose, so I made sure it was snug. Same for the 40-slot connecter. Didn't do a thing

I made sure I had the jumpers right - it's written on the HDD how to connect the jumpers (I have it set to slave, since my DVD-R is in the master position - Should I switch those two around?

I don't think the IDE cable is broken in anyway - I've enver had trouble with it, although If I find a spare IDE ribben laying around, i'll try it out.
I know it's not my PSU - I defintly have an over-watted system, and I only have a x8 AGP video card that would draw any too-much power

You never - EVER put a HDD and a DVD/CD drive on the same cable. Once the DVD drive spins up, the HDD has to wait for it's data, since the two cannot access the same IDE controller at the same time.

jack no matter how you turn it.
put two hdd's on one controler got problem.
put two cd-R on one controler expect lagg if burning from disk to disk.
my solution:
two IDE controlers two divices. one for the HDD the other for the DVD.
need more than one HDD, than use extra PCI controler.
with current tech it would be best to use Sata controlers.
Or get your self a Gbit network and a decent server.

i got 2 hard drives and 1 dvd and a cd-r drive no problems here
my motherboard has 2 ide ports so i have a master hd and slave hd
and a master dvd player and slave cd-r drive
and still room for 2 sata drivers

When two drives are on one controller, only one drive can work at a time. If you request 1GB from each drive, it's going to have to access the data on the first, access it, then spin up the second, find it, and access it - which takes a lot longer than it sounds.
This is why I slap people who think that putting games one one HDD, and XP on another, yet run them on the same IDE controller - is a good idea.
