About a week ago, I was tryign to update the firmware, or whatever it is, for an Asus DVD-Rom. The computer froze int he middle of it and now the DVD drive is not read on boot up. Furthermore, when it is plugged into the mtoherboard the computer boots slowly and will not load windows.

Is there anythign I can do or should I just send it back for an exchange?

Yes the firmware upgrade could be your problem that your PC boots slowly.
You could try to get a exchainge if the won't bother to check.
Becous firmware upgrades on asus DVD's wil void warrenty.
It states so on the warrenty card (Unless you bought OEM.)
And its clearly noted on the supported firmware updates of asus.

If you remember the old firmware version try to degrade back to that firmware incase you don't get a exchainge or refund from your retailer.

best advice from me about firmware's is.
IF ya don't REQUIRE a firmware update don't install it.
IF ya install a firmware update almost on all products its BY BY warenty, unless its aply'd by certified technician of the brand.
IF ya realy gota update your firmware try it afther a fresh reboot and have a minimum of programs runno to avoid contamination. in addition try to find the origional firmware currently used or make a backup incase things fail to try reversing.

It's fubared, and you've ruined your warranty by flashing the FW.

yup, toast. Although there is 1 way to fix it but that would require swapping out the sisterboard on the ROM with 1 from the same model, but definatly see if they'll replace it first, I also dont suggest telling them how it was made to "malfunction" or they may stick you with it as it is stated in most manuals/warranty's that bad firmware flashes are NOT covered by the warranty, so I'd just say it stopped working suddenly and for no "ahem" appearent reason, just to be on the safe side.

"just read the other comments, so yeah definatly dont tell them you flashed it.
