Ops.... I think I broke my iPod when I was messing around with the Microsoft Virtual machine… anyway I had to reformat it  phew. What is the purpose of virtual machines?

I am sure jack can explain in more detail, but the VM is basically so you can do things without worrying about screwing your computer up(like testing programs etc)

you ever wonderd.
i have one phisycal machine would it not be nice to install multiple OS on this one and be able to use them at the same time.
for instance i can have two windows xp on my machine.
one for office and applications and the other for games.
to bad this isn't the way virtual machines work.
but the do emulate a complete Computer like those dos emulators for those old games.
the allow you to install a OS on a virtual computer.
why would you say this is usefull.
1 ever had a program that you wanted to use but could contain spyware.
2 dedicated virtual web servers ? allowing full client controle.
3 terminal server for remote clients hell no. create virtual desktops for remote workers.
4 ever heard of backup in a flash ? don't backup your OS partition. backup your whole VM range in one swoop. and restore just like copying a file. no more grooling about backup tape drivers.
5 havent found a 5 yet but the wil come.
p.s. Microsoft virtual machine isn't the only software around.
next to MS the other two most know are. VM-Ware and Xen.

It's a computer emulator. It emulates basic computer hardware on your machine, so you can then install multiple OS' and test your software on them.

There has been a push lately in network enviroments to implement Virtualzation onto servers. It's seen as a money saver. Buy one powerful server and turn it into 2. Most techs will tell you other wise. Unless this is something you have to do, you usally don't. The main problem is when that one server gose down your actually loosing 2 servers. I think its a good idea, but untill we see some stability in NOS(network operating systems) I don't forsee this becomming big. Just my 2 cents though.

Reading the MCSE "Administering Windows XP Professional".. haha I learned that Windows XP creates a virtual environment for programs designed to run on FAT16/FAT32.. basically a miniature MVM

There already implimented today.
The company i do partime work at, uses this technology today.
And the key to get past your socalled server los is simple.
cluster managment.
you got the virtual machine files on a raid 5 NAS.
and backups on a raid 50 NAS.
(might employ other Raids. raid 60 or even 51.)
your servers are based on a VM cluster if one physical server failes a managment server detects this and orders a other avalable VM machine to load up the lost Virtual machine from the NAS.
In the unlikely event that a server fails you get a downtime of under 3 minutes. and even data los should be minimal unless there programs that like to store there data in RAM.
p.s. yes there is stil the issue of you need a good server to be able to run more than 2 vm's. but think of it this way all those dedicated shell linux servers that might only run apache+php, mysql, SSH/sFTP or some VPN / VOIP service.
o and about the NOS yes i should say this might be a long way to go to even a decent NOS system. and if there comming i won't forsee that this wil be a big hit. maby only for the realy big boys.
