So, I got some upgrades to my computer and decided to give EvE a shot. After about 8 days of play I have decided that EvE is just terrible! It lacks Many things that even a simple game should have.

This just seems kind of biased, and to be honest, eight days of EvE is hardly enough to get the best feel for it. All you'll do there is do missions unless you know the right people..

Quote:

For example, there is no 'save the day' action. In DS, if someone is bombing and I do nothing, that person wipes out my faction. In EvE, you go and ask for work (missions), and then the game server generates AI ships for you to fight. These AI ships will do nothing negative if you let them live. No one's ship is in danger, no trade routes blockaded, no loss of territory. When I don't want to do a mission, I say no and the game doesnt bother to create the enemies.

Alright, so these are missions. They are ment to be like that, their supposed to give you something to do to build up status with factions/corps which allow for more things.

Now, in the EvE after missions, you'll find out that trade routes can commonly be camped by corporations/factions, and that you are in ALOT of danger.

Quote:

Example 2: EvE has 30,000 players online at any given time. Given the 5000 systems this ammounts to about 6 players per system (just like DS), except they dont talk to each other and lack any real reason to interact.

Yeah, theres alot of systems, but there are alot that have no one in them and there is places like Jita (May that place burn.) with a few hundred. And people are very interactive, you just have to talk to them abit..

Quote:
Example 3: Collision detection. EvE doesnt have it! Warp through plants, stars, other ships, stations. Doesn't matter. Shoot enemies through asteroids as if they were out in the open. Watch ships go THROUGH solid objects like asteroids by running into it and wiggling.

I agree with some, as in we cannot run into planets and such.

Quote:

Example 4: It is FAR too slow growing. I just start out and I have to wait 15 days worth of skill training to get a ship bigger than a little destroyer. Every device requires more skill training, and most of them (while interesting concepts) aren't worth the cost in ship CPU and power to justify the 'reward' in using them.

Yeah, the skill system is abit bad, but imagine if you had new people running around in Titans after a month of playing, that'd be abit overpowered. While there is a 'Hey, this will make people pay more' side, theres also balance added to it.

And the CPU/Power/Damage/Armor/Shield bonuses are VERY worth it. It can decide a fight, and it can help you with various things like Mining, Production, Trade, and Corp Management.

Quote:

The only thing of interest I have found in the game is a complex economy, but I am not paying 15 bucks a month to play on an artificial version of Ebay.

You have to give the economy more credit then an eBay nock-off.. And theres more to EvE then just the Economy.

You need to get involved in Pirating, or Faction Wars. You'll see why 30k+ stick to the game.

Quote:

All in all, EvE is pretty, EvE is big, EvE has made some serious wrong turns in developing a "space game", especially since all the website trailers show vast and organized fleets and monster action-packed battles. Hardly any of that to be seen at all.

Really? So, a week or so ago, I was in a battle that had about 3x the max number of players ever involved in a DS server. And that's not the only fight I've been in like that there.. Fleet battles there

With that all said, comparing EvE and Darkspace would be like comparing C&C to HL-2. Where as they share certain things (Guns, Action) but are completley different styles of play.

ok i'm not going to read the many repiles BUT i liked the leveling system, no insta grand admiral like here. grey space is territory in a way, if you want it kill the people there and let them know who is boss. Jita would be where like 1/3 of their population hangs out and lags to death and sometimes crashes. i liked their ship designs, but i mean i've heard of ships that "exist" but somehow are impossible to get. thats pretty much my summary of eve. oh and i have had no problems with stuff not spawning unless some just recently killed them they spawned in a few min.

I'm new to both games. Went on a google search and found them.
After playing both of them for almost a week, Dark Space wins my
vote.

HOWEVER, Dark Space has it's own flaws that lend to it's seemingly
low online active body count.

What I liked and didn't about EvE.

- Liked the graphics. Very pretty
- Liked that movement through space was actually in 3D space.!!
- Didn't like the ship controls
- (this is just me being picky about aesthetics) Didn't like that the
ship didn't actually pass through the jumpgate in order to jump.
- Felt like distance between point A and point B was a bit of a boring
time killer. Although it does allow for bathroom breaks.
- It did seem like more of a "business" type of game. Not a lot of skill
involved. Accept the mission, turn on auto-pilot, run into an enemy,
click on your weapon and watch as the two ships fight it out with no
interaction from you, and complete the mission.
- Several times I couldn't find the target that was the objective of the
mission.

That being said, EvE does seem quite massive. I can see how 50,000
players can be online at once and you only see a few in each system.
That's ok I guess for that type of game. Maybe they overbuilt, I don't know.

Now,

Things I liked and didn't like about Dark Space,

- Graphics are good. Not great, but good.
- 2D space. A 3rd dimension of open space would really make this game
very interesting.
- Ship movement is good. The limitations of the jump drives (needing to
recharge before the next jump) adds a huge amount of realism and adds
a nice layer of strategy.
- I liked that you didn't have to choose one particular type of ship, even
from the beginning you can grab an engineering ship and help build up
defenses, or grab a transport and help take over planets, or grab a frigate
and go shoot at stuff. Nice versatility from the beginning.
- I didn't like that a player on your own side can waltz up and blow your
ship up, then take over the planet you just spent an hour building up.
- I didn't like that without some help from one of the higher ranking players
there really aren't any battles you can engage in without getting your
butt fried almost instantly. At low levels you are kind of stuck with
using an engineering ship and building up planets to gain levels until you
are high enough that you can get a ship that "might" last an hour or two.
I suppose you could do troop transports too.
- I didn't like that there are rules that seem to be made up by the players
and aren't hard coded into the game. It's a game. If there's something
that shouldn't be happening in game, stop it in code.
Case in point.

This last point is what killed it for me. I've uninstalled the game, and I
wont be back. Bickering and whinning over how one should use a tactical
weapon in a space game that is essentially a WAR, is just silly.

I was in yesterday, using a ship that I loaded up with level 10 armor.
When the armor was installed it read 133 percent. I saw my signature
rise a little bit, but ok, no biggie. Turn on the ECM and it dropped back
down.

Then everyone starts telling me, "Scrap your ship, it's bugged. It's in the
rules, you're going to get banned.".

So, for the first time in game I finally get my hands on a ship that has a
fighting chance of lasting more than 10 seconds, and suddenly I can't
even use it? It's banned from use in the rules? WHY IS IT STILL IN THE
GAME THEN???

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

In the end, both games obviously have their audience. EvE was just boring
for me, and Dark Space just seems out of control. The game itself should
set and enforce the rules, not the players. If the ship is there and usable,
or the beacons are there and usable, let the individual player decide their
own strategy on how to make use of it, or don't leave it in the game.

FWIW, I really liked Dark Space more than anything I've found out there.
The points mentioned above are what killed it for me though, and as I
said, I wont be back. (yes, I know, I wont be missed..)

Best wishes to all, you can delete my account, and this post if you wish.

@KISTech

Using a ship with over 100% armor isn't in itself against the rules. Going out of your way to create a ship that has that much armor, and repeatedly doing so is, as it's considered abusing the game system for an unfair advantage.

I am sorry you have had a bad experience with with some of the community reactions. The current game version is the victim of a very broken development cycle, and I agree that things should be fixed in code, but sadly, we can only work so fast. Progress on resolving these issues is being made, but not as fast as we would like as most of the development team have other full time commitments, such as jobs, families etc. None of us currently earns anything from working on DarkSpace and so supporting ourselves and our familes has to come first.

Hopefully, you will be willing to give the next version of DarkSpace a fair chance, and no, we will not be deleting your post or account.

You will be missed, and I can assure you that all views and feedback is welcome.

Wow, that was quick.

Believe me, I understand about life and it interfering with development.

If there's an email list for notification of when version 2 is available I'd
like to be on it. I'm always willing to give things a fair chance.

OK, we admit to a guilty secret...

Everyone with a valid email address is already on that list as it is considered vital service information...

The only current way to "remove" yourself would be to input an invalid email address, but as we don't ever send spam, there is little need to do this.

I tried Eve for 1 month.

I must say that I'm with both of the sides here...

First of all, my first and most important problem is the price.

EVE 14.95 €uros/month - 21$ Dollars a month

vs

DS 7.11 €uros/month - 9.99 $ Dollars a month.

I realise I'm already "wasting" enough time in front of the computer, I much prefer doing it having fun with DS, and with good friends.

Eve is an incredible machine, a great universe, you'd spend hours discovering new things, new places, new ships etc etc. In its own way, it is marvelous. But it is also incredibly long, and slow, but well organised, and has a huge player base.

After some serious thinking, I decided to come back to DS. Eve is TOO DEMANDING. Too much time, too much money, too much stuff to learn.

Is there any possible third choice out there? probably not yet.

But I would keep my eyes on here.... www.STARTREKONLINE.COM

Apparently a nice MMOG will come out .
