Its a vicious cycle.

Just a little bit of lag nothing serious on my end.
And only set /bps -1 afther the closing of a wormhole or when i enter a new system.
but like the said, don't download in the background.

Yes... go into task manager and make sure you have as little runnign in the background as you can... you may have tons of free memory but if you have too many programs taking up cpu cycles then you are bogging down your system...

I have a:

P1.4 /w 512 PC100 RAM and an ATI 9250 256MB vid card and a ancient 10/100 Lan card yet I have...

NO LAG... Hmmmmm

I'll beat you to that.
VXL Itona TC3821-XP:
VIA C3 800 MHz, 265Mb DDR1 ?, VIA integrated graphics controller - shared memory, onboard Lan, win Xp Embedded.

And i have no lag, just some graphics problems.

Yea, either its a bad route or a messy computer. My comp stats are almost the same as rocko's except with a 2.93mhz CPU. I rarely see actual lag from the game. The only actual lag I get is the common missle video lag when in planet clusters, which is easily fixed by zooming out more. Other than that its the odd desync once a few WHs have been opened into a system, which doesn't last long (usually fixed when i jump a couple times). There is one other thing I notice though, which is probally not lag, but rather in the game mechanics itself, is when there is too much objects being thrown at eachother in the same area it causes everyones devices to shortly disable. When it's really bad they literally flicker, almost near impossible to fire any new weapons at all (cough, i blame the really long ranges in this version).

Yeah, not downloading anything, used to have lag-free performance... This on my side, eh? I tried resetting the router and quering whether others were sucking up my bandwidth, but that turned out a negative.

Here's my ping record just to... I dunno, get it confirmed? : (

an average of 500 ms? Thats horrible kid. Thats like dial-up. Worse.

500ms latency = half a second before any data sent from the server reaches your computer, and any commands you send to the server.

so, ie, if you are cruising along, and a ship jumps in front of you, it's half a second for that data to reach you, and then another half a second for you to do something about it. A full second in combat for anything is unplayable.

I strongly suggest you find a better ISP, or not use dial-up/satelite.

As much as I like being called "kid", I'm afraid I'm too old to still sport such a nick.

I'm on broadband connection, actually. This connection's a beast, but it only seems to encounter difficulties in connecting to game servers. I thought of opening up ports, but then I realize I don't know what the port used by DS is; I mean, I can download at 500 kb/s to a decent site, that kind of constitutes "pretty damn good" to me.

well, I use kid whenever I refer to somebody I kinda like.

but, anywho, that does seem confusing. I believe darkspace uses ports 9000-9010, but I can't find it written down somewhere. It should be somewhere easily accesable.

also, if you're having problems connecting to game servers, are you using torrent programs? if your upload is set too high, it will choke your out going and give you the perceive effect of lag.

otherwise, this is really percular. I've never heard of a ISP where it gives you 500 kb/s a second download, but 500 ms lag. DSL shoudn't be satelite.

No, I actually don't use BitTorrent during game play. : D It seems really weird, sometimes my ping gives me < 150, sometimes it gives me > 500.

I'll try opening those ports or... Oh, Doran's in the lobby, lessee.
//Edit:

Apparently, I shouldn't need to be opening ports for this, so... Let's see if the problem lies elsewhere. Gosh darnit, and the K'luth are out right now... I want their AME Drives... : (
