Read the books and listen to the BBC radio plays, that is as far as you should go with the Hitchhiker's Guide. Those of you that haven't listened to the radio plays really, really should.

I'm not 42 years old...
I read the books and have been using 42 in online names for at least a decade or so, so I demand that everyone else stop using it or eventually I'm going to sign up to some new service and have to be dj424242421 or something.
I definitely think it would be a good idea to read the books before judging the movie as an example of douglas adam's work. His writing is considerably more funny.
