I actually get it, which probably amused me more than the joke.

Yea, I will admit it. I don't get it, and I don't feel like googling around to understand it.

When travelling towards something at VERY high speeds (near the speed of light) the wavelength of the light from the object doppler shifts towards the blue side of the spectrum.
Conversely, when travelling AWAY from something at hi speeds, it doppler shifts towards the red.

It doesn't really shift per se, but relative to your speed, it would seem to be going slower, and since blue light has a lower wavelength, it would "shift" towards looking more blue. Its all relativity, and I'm just being pedantic with word choice, since yours seems to ascribe agency to light waves.

This was actually a psychology experiment I was conducting. Knowing about red and blue doppler shifts is not of importance. I was more interested in how many people would a) flagrantly flout their ignorance or b) be a complete dick about the entire thread. Thanks CHUD.

Here's my thougts on this ---> you post a picture obviously with whitish colors and a redish background. It is what it is. Without clarifying any issues regarding the frame of reference (being this one), it is what we all see. Assumptions are the mother of all F-up's!

Blue is at the higher end of the frequency spectrum, not lower. Red would be the lower end of the spectrum.
As you approach a line of wave peaks at high speed, you would hit the peaks more often than someone sitting still and just letting the peaks pass by. This 'higher frequency' of peak encounters is seen as a shift of the light's color to a more blue/violet tone.

er, right.. yes, I had it backwards.
But hey, I'm a liberal artser - I was picking on word choice more than the facts. Its like in an old Dilbert strip:
PHB: I made a few upgrades to your design, Alice.
Alice: Do you realize you're not an engineer?
PHB: I'm better! I'm a well-rounded graduate of a liberal arts college. The broad exposure to diverse topics made me what I am today-a modern Renaissance man.
Alice: You scribbled out my timing circuit and wrote in "Moby Dick by Charles Dickens."
PHB: Exactly. I'll bet you didn't learn that in your engineering classes.
