When I look back a few years, I remember it being really hard to gain prestige for me. So I can feel with you. It was not only crashing into planets- which I still do ^^ or getting yelled at to back off the planet building, cuz I was a noob (hey how should I learn otherwise ...) and so on.
My past memories do not help you, so here are some additional hints:
Building:
Boring, but also interesting at the beginning. Ask in local or another engineer for tips.
Combat:
- Pick your fights! (I know it is easily said)
- If the target is too tasty - it might be a bait.
- Use long range weapons and stay at the outer side of a battle. Ususally nobody chases a frig, because you are faster.
- Try to assist shooting a bigger target which is already in low armor or hull (I had the impression that hull hits give more prestige - plz correct me, if I am wrong)
- Learn using the map to find wounded prey and to escape to a safe planet without hole-punshing a planet.
Supplying:
Yes - even the Grand and Fleet Admirals do it.
It gives nice prestige is relatively safe (unless supping during a battle)
A lost supp-ship does not hurt much and any station or dread pilot will be very gratefull for getting back to the fight even faster.
Years ago we had credits and sometimes you even got some donated.
Bombing:
In the old days this was the pres booster. You could whipe whole planets in one run with a small ship.
This has changed.
Bombing uses a lot of experience and you will kiss the planet now and then, or will jsut get reped by defenses.
Get a buddy for ECM support and kill the planet, or the troops.
Trial and error is the best teacher in this case.
If you dont want to make guys upset, look for a NPC planet to bomb.

Yes, thanks Im trying to do most of those things allready ... im just getting bored with repairing and building on planets ... i did that most of the time up to captain while constantly thinking about how great it will be as 2nd rear to finally be able to take part in battles ... now, I realy love this game dont get me wrong but if Im to supply till I can use a dread i think ill rather play something else ...
Anyways thanks for the tips and tricks ill try to keep them in mind ...

Dont need dreads, cruisers are great to. Lot of grand admirals still use cruisers most of the time. Try fighting some pirates ships, the small ones. Usually they dont have a whole lot of friendlies around, so you should be safe. Another thing to monitor is, when you are taking damage, make sure you keep your JD charged. Should you get jumped, you can always jump out and be safe.

At least not falling back once you made a new rank would be nice ... so that once you get it you dont have to repeat it over and over again ... but ill try using a destroyer for now to lessen the loss ...

if you want the pres at your rank i would go to the Rogans's Rift, since your a captian a gunboat dessie can do wonders in that server. the pirates are really weak and i was able to take out the cruisers in my dessie.

He flies destroyers more than any other class. He loves the Gunboat and Assault Destroyer.
