I have mixed feelings about the addition of AI in DS. I don't see them as particularly helpful, except when I need a supply and an AI is the only one to answer the call.

How about letting players of Rear Admiral rank or higher control AI ships? Maybe a Rear Admiral might be able to command a frigate, GA couple dreads or whatever.

I dont mean directly fly, but give orders like attck, escort, capture, repair, fly formation, etc...

Then, the AI would really be contributing to the battles, and would be really useful to the human players. Also, this would give a much more realistic, fleet task force element to the game.

Even a one on one battle could get reall interesting.

Imagine a lone dread flying about, actinc as bait. He gets jumped by admiral so-and-so who is commanding his own ship and a pair of cruisers. But, what he did not know, was mr. target dread had AI vesseles in waiting that are now about to pounce upon the attackers who took the bait. He givves the order, they jump in from their stand by positions.

This would give rank an entirely new, but more real life like meaning. It would also make the AI something more than target drones.

I like the idea, except with a lot of Admirals/Fleet Admirals/Grand Admirals on the server, how would the AI react to orders from several different people? Take the order of the one with the highest prestige? Take the most recent order? And what about high ranking people who don't know what their doing (I've seen it before)? Perhaps you can clarify a little...

why don't they have a command que, where its first come first serve, also, give the AI ranks, where you can only cammand that rank if you are an equal or higher rank

Yeah, first come first serve, when you take command of an AI ship it is in ayour group. Now in real life higher ranked officer would be able to assume command of another's group, but that would not make for fair and fun gameplay, so once an AI is in your group, it is yours until you release it or log off.

That is how I would do it. Maybe give each ship a value, like a point value. Each rank woud be able to command a certain maximum point value of ships. So a Rear Admiral might be able to command a couple frigates or a dessie, while maybe a GA might ba able to command a couple dreads and cruisers.

I was thinking it would be cool to have a command mode using the F2 screen. Assign waypoints, series of orders, conditionla orders, etc... But maybe this is too much work for the devs.

I don't think it has to be that complicated. Just allow people to give them orders. That goes for AI and capped ships. Doesn't even have to be very specificl orders. And for capped AI ships, their starting default order should be to jump to the nearest depot or supply platform.

We used to be able to give orders, but I don't remember how exactly it worked. We used to order AI transports around.

It does sound like a very intreguing idea, and got me thinking, the AI control should only be limited, I.E. Attack this target, defend here etc, I don't think players should be able to control AI fleets or we'll have masses of ships and mucho mucho lag. I think it would also create a kind of end game as people would be able to deal large amount of damage to system while others sleep.

I think a better Idea would be for players to form fleets outside of theirs (clan). Be able to filter them on the map and assign squads with orders. I'll explain.

Player A forms Fleet A and invites 10 others to join. Player A makes Player B, C and D Squad leaders, A squad are the short range ships (EADs, Torp Cruisers, Assult Destroyers) B Squad are the long range guys (Carriers, Missile boats) C Squad are the support tasked with support, transport and bombing.

The orders should only be easy one/two click type stuff, Player A would use the fleet management screen, click Squad A - Attack target 1.

Not actually sure if this would be viable at this point in time. Could be a usefull system for fleet battle events.

I don't know maybe I'm just waffling here, but another Idea.

Get organised, get vent, get binded, get killing!!!!!

The whole idea is to give the AI ships purpose, and to bring about the idea of task forces. As far as specific orders and control goes, that is exactly what Iam suggesting the devs impliment.

I am not saying let a single player control 10 ships or whatever. But 3 or 4 max would be sweet. Actually, I personally would not mind controlling an entire fleet of AI ships, like an RTS game, but I know that would never happen.

In Star Fleet Command Vol I, players could control up to 3 ships and actually hop in and out of them. I know the devs would never give us that great a degree of flexib ility, but something close, like heading up a small AI battle group, would really up the strategic element of the game.

In a another game, Ghost Recon, a great FPS I used to play, there was a mode where we could play multiplayer and control an AI squad. A friend of mine and I wasted so many hours of our lives on that because it was just great to deploy the squad with orders. We would set up snipers for cover and stuff, great fun.

We have plans that involve command points being given to players and those command points can be "spent" to command ai ships. For now however, if we allowed commanding them, there are some pretty big exploits that can occur. Once it costs command points to command them, it wont be as bad.

This is just a current idea and has not been fully flushed out yet.

I like this idea, many a time I,ve come on to a sever to find a small enemy fleet up to no good in my sector and either I cant get other players to join in ,in a counter attack (usually of farming AI) or there are too few of us to do any good. This idea would allow a small number player fleet to have a chance against a larger enemy fleet. Of course the enemy fleet could bring along its own AI so some kind of limiting filter would have to be built in....such as a limited number of AI ships available in enemy space, putting the onus on the attacking fleet to have more players in it and not one player jumping in when no body is on and taking the whole system on thier own.
