For some reason, I suspect certain people have found a bug in this game and exploited it ruthlessly. That, or they really need to get a life...

the 'bug' you speak of is bird sniping.
just rocket as fast as possable up and hit EVERY bird, cause they double your score. thats how u get rediculously high scores
