Yes, I believe that 50GU/s is actually more of a bad estimate than a literal statement. What I get from it is, REALLY FAST! And I've seen it myself with long-jumps too.

yeah, it is an update issue shig. They appear to be moving faster than sublight, slower than light speed. Its not anything the player is doing.
I think what happens is, if they jump out, and you flash into f2 screen, it will show the ship's position at last visible position, about 10k gu away. Then you PJ to that point, and when you come out, the prey you are chasing will appear to go speeding off ahead and disappear. Seems its almost like a ghost. Not quite the rubberband effect in reverse. Its a new phenomenon that I've never seen before.
While it is annoying, it really only costs you a jump and a recharge. Sucks if you are out of fuel, but that woulda happened anyways, right?
The way to overcome it is to ignore that little spot that his ghost appears, and use it to get a heading on the ship. Then, as explained before, you set a long distance jump beyond that point, and go. For some reason, the ghost won't appear as you overjump that point, as it does when you land AT that point.
Not sure if any of that helps, but me and a few squad mates have been working on a work around for it for a few weeks now, and that's what we have found in our trials.
Az

Good to know - thanks Az. Sounds like its more a "feature" of how data is transmitted than any particular exploit or bug.

Ok, thanks Azreal and Jbud, since you did explain it here and in private chat. But I also was thanking Az for verification, since one person telling me is explanatory but two is reassuring.
