I'm a frothing fan of Back to the Future, so hackneyed time travel isn't too much of a bother... and I'm only saying this to setup an interjection.

Great Spock!

I agree with Teal I think the writers were a little lazy and that this is going to make some of the die hard trekkies angry and not support the new direction of the franchise. Being a sucker for good action I did like it but I also did not like the plot with the time travel because I agree that this is going to be hard to move foreward after this and they now have thrown out the last 30 years of Star Trek and are trying to start brand new instead of just trying to tell a different story of the begining of Kirk and Spock and the others. They now a blank storyboard and an alienated fan base that made Star Trek what it is today.

I agree with Tael. Very long time Startrek fan. The constant rapture with Time Travel often feels like it's tainting the story line.

In the original series, we had amok time & the guardian of forever...and the avoided changes. ST4: Save the Whales had a great story that just incidentally (you thought it was critical, didn't you?) had them doing time travel.

Just about every other instance of time travel in every other episode or series represented lazy writers.

On the movie - being spoiled with the Sci-Fi channel, I couldn't get over the feeling that the story would have been FAR FAR better served being presented as a 10-15 hour mini-series. Simply, there's too much story and you simply can't condense it into 2 hours and you can't make it 3-5 or you'd never get people to watch it on the big screen. For what it was, a re-boot for the franchise that HAD to run in 2 hours...it was awesome.

It could have been so much more.

I'm disappointed at their choice to throw up the option to re-write ANY Canon events that they wish from now on.
