What does it honestly matter if you're subbed or not? Giving your opinion was a right you had back when I played, one that was acquired without having to pay for it.
Beyond "get a job", you also have to consider what you're paying for.
DarkSpace offers, for $9.99/month:
- Combat against simple AI in better ships.
- The ability to build planets, which is... not really that thrilling.
- The opportunity to occasionally brawl with other players if you are lucky.
The terrible customer support, lobby, snarky player base, downright rude surplus of staff, complete lack of timely updates and the "we're volunteers so stop whining" treatment are all free.
Now, number #3 is probably the best reason to pay, but if there are too few other players who pay, the benefit of #3 gets reduced.

I don't understand. Why are you expecting AAA game quality support from a purely indie game again?
That's right, you like to troll.

There are no plans in the works to make darkspace entirely free, and there are a number of reasons in this thread as to why we'll continue using a subscription model for the forseeable future.
You may debate the various pros, cons and economic viability amongst yourselves, but realistically I dont see it changing anything.
