You could just have a nice screen shaking effect from significantly huge blasts. Actually make it look like some weapons have decent force behind them.

or maybe we can have the velocity of the ship added to the speed of weapons. That'd be more fun.
and maybe we can get rid of the armor circle too. Maybe an armor rectangle, since most ships are longer then wide.

Screen shaking is a horrible idea and rather annoying, one reason i uncheck the option in EVE Online. it can also distrupt your ability to target or select your UI if it shakes the whole screen. no thanks.
I do like the idea of impact rocking the ship maybe like Backy said on its Y axis, gives it abit more realism feel like broadside impact of ship of the line galleon etc.

moving ship around - like f said probably not a great idea game-engine wise, but itd still be interesting to see in a game so i think its pretty original and neat (az, play nice).
making the ship shudder or rock on the Y axis - might be interesting. youd have to check how it looks obviously =)
i can imagine a couple extra weapons effects thatd look fancy though. when a projectile impacts some debris would be left coming out of the hole it had just made, so there would be a debris trail behind it. having a short trail of smoke that quickly fades after an impact might be neat.

Maybe also add it to the turn rate to simulate being knocked off course?

Its easy to have weapons take the velocity of their ship: just make inheritVelocity() return true;
Its in there for a weapon or two, but generally isn't used. But the code is there.
