When you are not part of a fleet you have no default faction.
Every time you join a server you will have the option to select a faction. But; there is i a log-out timer of ~two minutes before you can rejoin.
To basic. Just exit the game (back into GCQL) and wait two minutes before rejoining a server.
The faction selection will be available again.
