But then you'd have to be up close to the enemy.

That is the point. Do it right and flying a sensor scout is already very easy.
Stop looking for an I win button.

It's not an "I win" button. It's just another function.
It's a ship with its inherent advantages and disadvantages.
Scouting is much easier. Just jump in close, hit the ECM to remain hidden and when you see the enemy, your entire faction does too.

It is a good idea, just not for darkspace. if you want something which garentees you to be able to detect something monumentally far away, go elsewhere. this isint real life, so there are no reasons to HAVE a system like that. ALL SHIPS HAVE SIMILER SCANNERS
To give you an idea why we need the AWAC for long range detection, is that not everything has the ability to SEE that far, the horizon is a major thing for ground forces and a flying radar platform has a much further horizon, and can scan further. as a result its a mobile radar dish.
the other point is that tanks and infantry do not have radar nor the ability to see like that, they rely on the eye in the sky to get generalised information like that, artillery also can use that for long range spotting.
What happens when everyone can see the same distance with the same standard equipment that can be mounted on a corvette? everyone has it, it trivialises the need for a specialised ship for it. we have the sensor frigate, it does the same job with its 4+ scanners/eccm.
besides if you get your 15000gu detection range, i want my 200,000 gu range planetbuster dreadnouht which while has no armor and is easily killed (so people have to guard it) it can instantly kill anything it manages to hit. why? because we are talking about overpowered things nobody needs, so i might aswell drop my ideas aswell right?

Yup. I understand whatcha trying to say.
We're suppose to be able to scan infinitely far out there in space, but apparently we're limited to perhaps 5000gus or so, unless the target has a huge sig value.
Still, if it existed, I don't think that "everyone" will have a long range radar all of a sudden. This is a specific ship for a specific role, and not a piece of equipment or mod that can be mounted on any vessel. How many dictors do you see deployed per side most of the time? I'll bet it's just one. And it'll prob be the same for a radar ship.
You can't fly combat, so you're not gonna get pres in a hurry.
And you need to keep dodging enemy attention.
I don't think we're gonna see radar spamming, srsly.

The way this is initially suggested to work wouldn't work. If you wanted a Radar ship, you might be able to get away one of the following without screwing everything else up:
-The radar ship simply multiplies signature by a factor within some range. Ships with 5 now have 10, 10 have 20, etc. It would not help the detection of cloaked ships or ships with negative signature already (unless you wanted to give it a set increase to negative signature ships, maybe +3). If you wanted to go this route, the radar ship should be very vulnerable to K'luth attacks (Frigate or Scout Size with lots of energy drain to keep them from moving much), otherwise it's too hard for the lobsters. It would, however, give them some incentive to fly smaller ships that can hit and run the sensor ship before bringing in the big dreads.
-The radar ship makes all non-negative sig ships in some range visible under F2/Navigation, but has NO tactical effect.
-The radar ship is basically a giant ECCM but does NOT have a constant effect like regular ECCM. It can only ping once every, say, 15-20 seconds. You may even include the ability to detect cloaked ships (again, in this case, you'd want to make them vulnerable to K'luth). In this way, you can detect the presence of enemies but not have a definite tactical advantage over them.

Interesting concept, but I think we've overlooked one thing.
When the radar ship lights up, only the faction which owns the radar ship will be able to see everything within range on their scope.
If the other faction doesn't have a radar ship up, they don't see anything beyond what they normally see. The only thing new they'll pick up is the radar ship itself. Because as radar works.... when you emit, you're detectable at an even longer range by passive sensors then what you're able to detect.
So I think Sig values won't be usable. It shouldn't work like ECCM by raising all sigs.
